Breakup is one of a few Japanese horses that are making their way to the Victorian spring carnival. Breakup has its sights set on the Caulfield Cup, using the 2400m race as a stepping stone to the 3200m race that stops a nation.

Soulcombe was an early favourite for the 2023 Melbourne Cup after putting on a clinic in Spring last year in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2400m). He has only placed once in the Autumn carnival (Flemington 2600m), where the other races were shorter, and out of his comfort zone. He has since won a 1700m at Caulfield, which caused another drop in odds, for the long-distance strong finisher.

Lastotchka was a late entrant to the Melbourne Cup, after a sale to Australian interests. The French mare has a solid 33.3% winning record in France, and is also a strong placer with a 70% place rating.
