AFL Finals Week 1 Tips 2024

Betting Tip: Port Adelaide by 22

The first hit out for week 1 of finals might be the biggest lacklustre of the week. The books are favouring Port as the second biggest lock for the round, with the number one being Carlton, but the Blues getting pumped will never not be funny.

Geelong aren't in the best of form and although they won 4 of their last 6 games - all wins were against bottom 10 teams.

Port on the other hand are looking pretty winning their last 6 games in a row, including two top 8 teams.

Port managed to upset the Cats back in May and beat them in Geelong, and with the home ground advantage, their explosive midfield, Georgiades becoming a goal kicking machine - I think the Power will be sent straight to the Prelim.

Betting Tip: Western Bulldogs by 16

A fitting game for Friday night, I'm tipping this to be match of the round. The Bulldogs have one of the best lists in the league, and the loud and proud baby Hawks just taking scalps for fun.

As much as the Hawks have made other teams look like witches hats this year, I don't think they will be mentally prepared for this Bulldogs outfit. The Hawks did beat them earlier in the year, which helped build up their confidence moving forward and they've had an incredible run since.

The Bulldogs were just as good back then, but were incredibly volatile losing 1 week, winning the next. They've found more consistent form of late, and have matured as has the season.

I can see this being a very close game, or blow out in any direction. If either team gets on a run, I think momentum and confidence will break the barometer, and the other team will be left frustrated and finger pointing.

But, I'm tipping it will be more of an arm wrestle the entire match, but there are too many Bulldogs capable of being a match winner up-forward in Bont, Darcy, Ugle-Hagan, Weightman - so I'm tipping them to break away with it in the last 10 minutes.

Betting Tip: GWS by 8

Although I've jumped on the Giants bandwagon for the AFL Premiership winner - these Qualifying Finals don't have the same sting as the Eliminations. Still, this should be one of the biggest games in Sydney's history, really splitting all the fans across the city.

The Giants got themselves a modesty check by the Dogs in Ballarat last week, to ruin their string of 7 wins in a row - including 3 top 8 teams. The Orange Tsunami has had the best, and most, recent experience of decent teams coming into the finals, and have played them fantastically.

Sydney on the other hand, have been in form slump for the better part of two months, and although they have won their last 3 games - they were against bottom 10 teams. If we go a bit deeper, they lost all 3 games prior to this, and all were against top 8 teams.

I think Sydney's slump is only masked at this by playing less than competitors. I think they've gone complacent and soft, or lazy, while the other teams have become more hardened warriors. The chickens are really going to come home to roost now, and Heeney, Warner and Gulden are all going to have to play more than just one quarter if they want to win.

Betting Tip: Brisbane by 34

Possibly the most anticipated game of the finals round, fits in nicely for Saturday night - will Brisbane finally send Carlton on their way?

Surely. Carlton have been hanging in by a thread due to sheer luck, and their captain Patty Cripps and his incredibly sore shoulders.

Brisbane, are unlucky not to have made the top 4 after dropping so many winnable games, but are arguably the best team on their day - and those days have been a lot more common in the back half of the season.

Carlton are just so badly injured at the minute that they are going to struggle. With a bunch of players up for "test", puts serious doubt in my mind with whether they will perform.

Cerra, Curnow, De Koning and McKay will probably all be gritting their teeth through whatever testing is done to them so that they can play - but at what cost? Footy is a tough game to play, and they may go down in the first minute if they aren't 100% right and be down a player.

Against a depleted Carlton side, or Carlton twos, Brisbane win easily every day of the week.
