Love Island Australia 2023 - Exclusive Interview with Zac & Trent

How did you guys get on the show? What sort of, put you apart from the competition?

Zac: "I sent an application video, and then I think really the interview was the thing that gets you in there".

Trent: "Yeah I think the face to face".

Zac: "Because I saw a few schmucks walk in the interview area before I went in there".

Trent: "Yeah we knew we had them covered".

Zac: "They walked out with their heads hanging down you know. I just went in there, and basically, you get the interview and its like a three stage process, and I was just went in and said, 'I'm your guy'. They went why, and I said, 'I just know what I'm doing and I'm funnier than anyone you'll ever meet' - and I think they just liked the confidence".

Trent: "My ex was actually runners up on Love Island last year, so that helped me, they love a bit of a cross over, so that was a big topic of my interview with them, and I knew I was in good hands after name dropping her".

Mason: "But, why did you apply Zac?".

Zac: "Well, I broke up with my ex at the beginning of the year, and I said 'you watch this space, I'm going to date a Victorian Secret Model'. And then I went to Italy and met these people and they said you should apply for Love Island, and I was like, that's actually not a bad idea, and then I applied and yeah - the rest is history".

Fantastic. Did you guys see each other in the audition, or anyone else that was on the show?

Zac: "Believe it or not".

Trent: "We heard the other day that we were two interviews apart from each other".

Zac: "Yeah we were with the executive producer the other day and he was like 'yeah we actually interviewed you guys two spaces apart', but we didn't see each other because basically when you go into the interview room, it's a three room thing, they hold you in this waiting room, and only bring one person in at a time, then they will make sure there is no one in the hall way, and then they will say go. Then they will close the door behind you and wait for the hallway to be clear and then move you around the rooms so you don't see anyone else. But when I first arrived, I arrived 30 minutes early and I was just watching people walking in - just wanted to scope out the talent".

So lightning struck twice for the producers? Bang. Bang

Zac: "Yeah literally. They said they literally had their cast, but when the met us, they were sold. We need to change it up. They thought 'these idiots are gonna make us a lot of money',".

Trent: "And a lot of hate".

How do you guys keep under 8% body fat while getting on the piss every night?

Trent: "Well we're only allowed 2 drinks a night".

Really?

Trent: "You get the feel for it after the second beer, and then they cut you off".

Zac: "Yeah literally. They are really restrictive with how much you drink, because it is one of the only shows where you are sharing a bed with a stranger, you know. So they don't want any, weird things going on, without consent".

Trent: "Except you".

Zac: "Yeah they don't want nonconsensual weird things going on".

Trent: "Nah they've got a consent button".

Zac: "Yeah they don't want you doing anything weird, so you got a little consent button at the end of the bed, and you basically have to press that, if you're gonna.. Get under the sheets".

Trent: "I think the last of the like, big heavy drinking on TV was like Big Brother 6-7 years ago, when that big scandal happened, when they were all pissed up, so, I think kind of all reality TV is pretty limited now, which is a shame".

Zac: "Well, for alcoholics its a shame, for me - I think it's a great thing".

Zac: "But in terms of keeping in shape, you get like three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch and dinner are catered, so you basically eat, whatever they give you, which is normally meat and veg. I think I lost weight when I was in there actually".

Trent: "But, you're that bored as well, and there is a gym in there, so sometime's we would do two workouts a day, and shit like that. Cause yeah, there's not much else to do apart from that".

Zac: "And then when you see your girl talking to someone else, it's like, alright I'm just going to go hit the gym for a bit. And you're in the hot sun. They can watch me, I'm not watching them".

And it was hot as well I'm guessing. So you are sweating bullets the entire time?

Zac: "There was a heatwave when we were there".

Trent: "You hopped out of the pool sweating".

Zac: "I've had people messaging me asking if that was baby oil I was using, and I said no that's sweat, it was that hot".

So did much happen under the sheets that the camera doesn't show?

Trent: "I think the camera is showing, exactly what happened under the sheets with Zacy boy".

Zac: "I watched an episode the other night with my mum, and yeah under the sheets, and I was like far out man. How do I even explain that away. But yeah, we were cutting shapes but it wasn't...".

Trent: "It looked like you were wrestling a fair but under there".

Zac: "Yeah, there was a bug under the sheets, I had to try and get it out".

Trent: "But like, they have been doing Zac a bit dirty this week. Like every single night, it's just...".

Zac: "It cuts to me, and you see me going under the sheets".

Trent: "And he just pulls the doona over his 60kg body, and then all you see is the sheet, just going ham".

So, was it mostly you Zac, or did anyone else get lucky?

Zac: "Well I can't confirm nor deny, nah, I don't think anything has happened at this point in the show".

Trent: "There's a little bit of like, touchy feely".

Zac: "But they actually cut a few things out as well, there might be some people with some wandering hands that haven't been exposed actually, and I feel like, there's been an injustice there".

Do you care to elaborate?

Zac: "Well, I can't say for sure, because basically the show hasn't finished airing, but basically nothing has really happened yet. Me and Lucinda, we were the Trojan Horse of the operation. We stormed the gates together, and then people started to follow suit after a while, once they realised what was happening".

Trent: "It's pretty wild, because everyone asks what it's like sleeping in a bedroom with 6 or 7 beds, because literally a metre to your right is another couple, and a metre to your left is another couple again, so you can hear pretty much everything that goes on. Yeah, you can hear a couple of fingers splashing in a puddle".

What about Ollie, the guy who gets 15 roots a week. Did he get lucky?

Zac: "No I don't think Ollie managed to find a connection in there. He may have found a connection with his hand at some point".

Trent: "But he was hilarious, we loved Ollie".

Zac: "Yeah Ollie was hilarious, you only see about 5% of what really happens in there".

Trent: "Especially when you only last a few days".

Zac: "But everyone gets on really well, and he was hilarious. Everyone thought he was so funny, because he just said it like it was, he didn't try and hide his sexual activities.".

Trent: "Which he probably should have. He'd probably still be in there".

I don't know if you guys have seen the odds on yourselves, but Zac you're paying $3 to win, and Trent you're a bit of roughie, you're paying $15. You're the least favourite actually.

Trent: "Load up on me".

Who should I put my money on?

Zac: "Between the two of us, it looks like right now, I'm the only one with (a partner) Lucinda, but things change. It's too early to tell for anyone".

Trent: "Yeah because. It's just hard because there is still a few more bombs to come in, and literally 24 hours in there feels like a week, so much can change in a short amount of time that nothings certain. Like someone can come in and steal, for example..".

Zac: "Yeah well Ryan came in and stole Lucinda. And you just don't know because you get booted, and they will be looking for a connection with someone else if they're not into you, you know. And literally, things change as quick as a day, you'll be solid with someone and then the next day its like, oh my goodness, not anymore".

Trent: "Yeah and I think as it stands, it's pretty right in the betting, Zac and Lucinda are the strongest at the moment".

Zac: "But yeah, things change you know".

Were you pretty filthy when Ryan came in and stole Lucinda?

Zac: "Oh man. I was so filthy. The thing is, when you're a guy and you're already in there, you don't think of it from their perspective. So I wasn't thinking he's gone in there and he's got to do what he's got to do. I was thinking, this bastard has taken my girl off me. So I was just so filthy with him, but I think I had a chat with afterwards and we settled it. And we've seen each other since and we're good now, but at the time for sure. Because you're stuck in there 24/7, you're on jack all sleep, and you're emotions are running high, and you just react on them. And, you wouldn't act in their the way you would act in the real world, but you just can't help it".

Trent: "Yeah emotions are running high and they just make you act up".

Are you referring to you guys yelling at Abby?

Zac: "Well that's right. She basically came in and I had one conversation with her on a date, and then she went in there speculating that Zac's with you Lucinda, because of your followers. And for me it's like, how do I defend myself against that, and I just saw red. Like how dare she. She's been here for 5 minutes.

Trent: "I think we both knew as soon as we did it, we f****d up".

Zac: "The moment she walked off crying, we were like".

Trent: "What the f***".

Zac: "Maybe we handled that (poorly)".

Trent: "At the same time, like we said before, you're in a Villa, in a different experience, you can't even explain it compared to the outside world, you just react completely different, and yeah, you don't react accordingly".

Zac: "The cameras don't really capture it though, but like, the day after we were best buds with Abby, and she became part of our group, and we hung out every day and chatted and took photos. But, because it doesn't suit the storyline, they don't need to add that in, but everyone in there became really good friends".

Trent: "And we've seen Abby on the outside a couple of times since, and it's been super chill".

Who was actually there for love and was there anyone there to just increase their Instagram followers? Besides Zac.

Zac: "I think people go in there thinking, okay well I'm going to get exposure. So, I think on that level everyone. But I will genuinely say, I actually think everyone was open to finding love".

Trent: "Which is also hard, because when you think about it, you've got 12-13 girls in one Villa, the chances of finding a match is quite slim, when you can go to a club and there's a few hundred girls, so a lot more opportunity".

Zac: "If you're going in there, and you're finding a new connection every couple of days, I think that goes to show what you're in there for, you know. For me, I couldn't make a connection with three different girls in a period of two weeks, I just wouldn't. I don't think it's possible".

Speaking of Instagram. Did you know you have a fan page Zac, on Instagram?

Zac: "I've got a fan page?".

Zac: "You're kidding me".

It has zero followers at this stage.

Zac: "It adds up. It makes sense now".

Trent: "I actually saw that exact fan page on his instagram".

Zac: "What?".

Trent: "It's you isn't it? Haha".

You claim to be a snake in the grass and went out of your way to steal Lucinda from Nate. Would you have done the same thing if Trent was seeing Lucinda?

Zac: "Well no, this is the thing. We'd been in there for 2 days at that point of me knowing Nate, and I said to him, the gloves are coming off, I don't care, I like this girl, I'm going for her. But like, I wasn't boys with Nate, I was boys with Trent. Trent and I had an actual friendship, as far as I was concerned I was an acquaintance with Nate. But, it looks really really bad, but you know. I didn't actually do anything really that wrong, I don't reckon".

Trent: "Look who ended up with the chocolates".

Zac: "I had tunnel vision, I'm just going to get this girl, it doesn't matter. But the way it was shown, it does look really dishonest, but I said to him, you could say I'm a bit of a snake in the grass, but I said I was going for her. But we were all good straight afterwards, because we explained it all, and the conversations are cut to 5 minutes, when it's like a 2 hour conversation. So, we were on the same page afterwards. But, I don't think I'd do anything differently".

Trent: "Nah no way. You're flying from Melbourne to Spain, you're not there to make buddies with guys, you're there to find a girl".

Zac: "And this is the thing, everyone went in there saying 'I'm prepared to step on toes'".

Trent: "We actually did".

Zac: "We were actually stepping on toes".

Zac: "And yeah, Ryan did as well".

Were you a bit worried when Nate was grilling you about throwing him under the bus though?

Zac: "Um. Well, no not really. I just thought you know what man, I guess I'm a bit of a snake in the grass, not really a whole lot we can do about it now. It's done. But my whole conversation with him was like, I'm not going to go over to Lucinda and be like 'yeah Nate is a great guy, get to know him more. He is really handsome and funny'. I'm going to try and needle her and say, he's actually not that good looking - even though I don't really believe that. But Nate is actually a really great guy".

Trent: "We were all OG's, original cast. Zac, Nate and myself, we were super close. And at the moment, Nate and I are having a huge competition fighting over the same girl, and like, we were laughing about it during the day, but obviously you don't see that on TV".

Fair enough.

Trent, do you know if they teach indecent exposure at law school?

Trent: "It's definitely a topic they need to bring in, I think".

Three blokes tattooed on Sav's body, and loves shagging 45 year olds, but the nudes in the photo booth - that tipped you over the edge?

Trent: "That was enough to, make my grandma roll in her grave I think. That turned me off. We love Sav, we love her humour and that, but in my opinion, when you're getting to know a girl in this environment in a short amount of time, you don't want to be hearing about that type of shit. But, it was just a bit of an ick and a turn off and I'm good friends with Sav and we talk most days, but I think at that moment I knew it was just a friendship after hearing those few things".

Zac: "Sav's great, Sav's awesome. But, you need to be a really secure guy to date someone like Sav, because she's just wild".

I can see that. What's your beef with fake boobs Trent?

Trent: "F*** I got stitched up with that. Well now I've realised I do like fake boobs, because Georgia's were pretty nice. Nah I dunno, I've always had this thing that I don't like a lot of cosmetics, and I let my mind get the better of me and I accidentally said it out loud which I regret. But, at the end of the day it was pretty funny. I actually forgot that I said that, so watching it back was a bit of a shock, like you forget a lot of the things you do on there, and when it pops up on the TV you squirm a bit. You get a bit of second hand embarrassment".

Was there anything that you guys said that would have got you canceled, or did the producers tell you to reign it in at any time?

Zac: "Nah, I think they've pretty much aired the worst of what we said".

Trent: "Yeah, I think we knew what was coming, we knew what we did".

Zac: "If they could, they would".

Trent: "At the time, there are 70 or 80 cameras around the house, and after 2 days of being there, you're so used to being there you don't think twice about being yourself, saying what you would say at home with your friends, I feel like Zac and I are prime examples of that".

Zac: "You can't really fake it, in that environment. There's just no way, I don't reckon".

Trent: "You can see a few people are faking it".

Zac: "Well yeah, yeah".

Trent: "But we stayed true to ourselves".

Who was faking it?

Zac: "I'm not saying any names. I'll let you guys be the judge of that".

Trent: "I think maybe everyone but Zac and I maybe".

Both of you seemed to love initiating a nude shower outside. Was this because one of you is packing or because you both rate your peaches for the camera and for the girls?

Zac: "Well the thing is, there is two showers. Theres one shower for the boys outside, we all shower together outside every night, they don't show it. All the boys, we had like seven men in there at one point".

Trent: "I think we might've got caught showering together inside though. We've got no excuse for that".

Zac: "Yeah, we just wanted to be inside for once".

Zac, how much Bondi Sands did you have to consume throughout the show and many steroids?

Zac: "I'm all natural".

How come you never offered any to Trent?

Trent: "I look malnourished on there".

Zac: "I didn't spend any time in the shade, I was quote conscious, just wanted to be as brown as possible, even the week leading up to it, I was just sunbathing the whole time. And then the whole day, I'd just lay down in the sun and avoid the shade at all costs".

You can tell, you're extremely bronzed.

I personally thought that Kale and Ben were both done dirty. Was that manipulated by the producers because they were the most normal?

Zac: "Nah, you'd be surprised how little the producers had to do with the dumpings. We'd talk to them afterwards, and they'd be like we were shocked about X, Y, Z. So, they'd be as shocked as us some times. I think as far as reality TV goes, it'd be one of the least edited shows".

Trent: "I agree, I feel like Ben and Kale were two of the most mature boys in there. Miles ahead of Zac and I. And, they probably did get done a little bit dirty, but at the end of the day, it's the way the story line went, and Ben didn't get a whole heap of air time, but at the same time, there might be reasons for that. And Kale obviously, had a huge redemption era, he comes back in and for what we saw last night, him and Tyra look pretty smug together so - hopefully they make it to the end".

Speaking of the producers. The spin the bottle game. Was that rigged?

Zac: "No. I was like, lets play spin the bottle, cause I wanted to kiss Lucinda. And I was like let's do it".

How long had you been practising your spin then? You got it spot on.

Zac: "No no no, they only showed one spin. They don't show every single spin. So by our time in there, we'd kissed everyone".

Trent: "You get sick of kissing".

Zac: "You get sick of kissing everyone, but I was going to keep playing until it landed on her for sure".

Did anyone have a crack at Sophie Monk off camera?

Zac: "She's married now".

Trent: "She's happily married".

Zac: "But she is so funny, she's so cool, we really liked Soph. But yeah, Trent snuck in a few compliments and flirtatious remarks".

Trent: "Absolutely. I told her to get in my DM's when I was talking to her one time".

Which guy did you like the most? Besides each other.

Zac: "To be honest I actually love all the guys by the end of it".

Trent: "Yeah, I was pretty close with Kale, which they haven't shown on camera".

Zac: "Yeah we were real tight with Kale and Reid probably. But Ben as well, and Ollie. We were all tight as hell".

Trent: "You just build a connection that you can't really explain, like everyone says 'you've only know each other a week, how can you be that close?', and this and that, but you literally can't explain it because like we said before, a week in there, is like 2 months on the outside. You build connections really quick, and you get attached to each other and yeah".

Kind of like the Contiki group mindset?

Trent: "Yeah literally, that's literally it".

Regarding the girls in the house. F*** one, Marry one, Kill one.

Zac: "I'm not playing this".

Trent are you playing it?

Trent: "Yeah I'll answer, f*** it. Out of who?".

Zac: "Any of the girls in the house".

Trent: "I thought you were going to list a few. Oh f***. I'm just trying to think".

Trent: "What do you think?".

Zac: "I'm not playing it".

Trent: "Ah, I'll come back to it. I'll get in strife won't I?".

Zac: "Yeah you'll get us in trouble".

Trent: "Yeah, I better not".

Fair enough. We weren't expecting much from that one.

Who is the friendliest person in the house?

Zac: "Ooh. I'm going to say Kale".

Trent: "Probably Kale".

Zac: "Actually Lucinda, actually".

Trent: "I'm going to say Kale, he is a loveable guy".

Zac: "I think whenever someone new came in Lucinda was definitely the friendliest though".

Trent: "A little bit too friendly some may say".

Zac: "Come on man. Not cool".

Trent: "We'll talk about it after man".

Who did you like least in the house?

Zac: "Oh I can't say that. You'll figure it out, pretty soon".

Trent: "Yeah".

Zac: "It'll all be shown I'm sure".

What about up until this point in time?

Zac: "Um this point in time....... No comment, I'm not commenting".

Trent: "We're in damage control".

Final question, who do you think will win, and why? From this point in time.

Trent: "After watching Kale come back in the Villa last night, we watched it together on TV, I think Tyra and Kale look really good together"

Zac: "At the moment".

Trent: "As it stands".

Zac: "As it stands. But I think Georgia and Nate are looking like, they are going somewhere to. Obviously I am going to be bias and say, I look good with Lucinda at this point, but people are just coupling up now".

Trent: "And Tyra and Kale just coupled up last night, so it is too early to call it I guess, and obviosuly my boy Zac and Lucinda look pretty cute together, so I'm hoping they make it to the end, but yeah there is still so long to go".

Zac: "There is still like three weeks though, there is so much to go".

Plenty of drama to unfold

Zac: "Literally".

Trent: "You haven't heard the last (of us)".
