Why Olivia Rodrigo will win the 2023 Triple J Hottest 100

Jimmy Mason

Jimmy Mason

While it is easy enough to say that the best song of the year will win the triple J Hottest 100 - music is incredibly subjective. So, who determines what the best song is?

Well, it's determined by which song gets the most votes from the voters, which there were 3.2 million in 2019, and it is referred to as the greatest music democracy in the world.

So, it has to be the song that most people like the best?

Sure, in theory, and "vampire" by Olivia Rodrigo has had 544 million plays since it was released on June 30, and is averaging 121 million plays a month (as of November 15). In comparison Rhyme Dust by Dom Dolla is averaging 8 million plays a month. Although Doja Cat's "Paint the Town Red" has averaged 163 million plays a month since it was released at the start of August.

But, people also like variety. When voting, most people will include songs over different genres. If one song in that genre is a clear winner, then it will likely appear on many voting slips.

Looking back in the past 4 years (as shown below), the songs that have won the triple J Hottest 100 have had a distinctively different genre than that of it's competitors at the top end.

  • In 2022, Flume won with "Say Nothing" (Indietronica/EDM) and there were 5x Indie/Surf Rock songs in the Top 10. The other different genre song in the Top 10 was B.O.T.A. by Eliza Rose (House), which came second.
  • In 2021, The Wiggles won with their cover of "Elephant" - which incorporated Psychedelic Rock with Children's Music. Of the rest of the Top 6, three were Hip Hop and two were Indie Rock.
  • In 2020, Glass Animals won with "Heat Waves" (Indietronica/Rock) and the rest of the Top 8, three were Indie Rock, two were Hip Hop and the other two were Psychedelic and Indietronica.
  • In 2019, Billie Eilish won with "Bad Guy" (Art Pop). The rest of the Top 10 four were Indie Rock, two Hip Hop and two were Aussie Pop. The only other genre differentiation was "Rushing Back" by Flume (Indietronica), which came second for the year.

This year, the favourites are heavily saturated as House, Hip Hop and Pop. Olivia Rodrigo's "vampire" is considered "Pop Rock", although many are distinguishing it to sound similar to Billie Eilish and Lana Del Ray, with a more Alt/Art Pop sound.

Whatever you want to analyse the genre of the song as, anyone with working ears can enjoy that Oliva Rodrigo's "vampire" is a breath of fresh air compared to the other songs that are favourites, which are all hip hop or dance/club tunes. Doja Cat also has a strong differentiation to the other songs, and will likely be one of the last songs of the night.

But with the strong odds available for Rodrigo, we're having a punt on her!
