Proline+, the new version of OLG's sports betting website, is a good option for new sports bettors who need resources to learn more about betting. This book also offers the assurance of safety, as it’s government-run, along with in-store betting locations, which can be helpful when running into issues.
We wouldn’t be able to recommend Proline+ to experienced bettors, or soccer bettors. The value of the soccer odds doesn’t match up to other commercial betting sites in Ontario, and the site lacks the options & features that can be found on other bookmakers. But we do love that the proceeds from the sportsbook are reinvested into provincial organisations like schools and hospitals, which we think is exactly what a government run betting site should be doing.

Overall, Rivalry is a fantastic choice for bettors looking to dive into the world of eSports, as you can bet on a huge number of markets and enjoy watching live directly on the betting site. The sports betting is a bit disappointing, and there are plenty of better options in Ontario, but that has never been Rivalry's focus. What they do offer is delivered exceptionally well, and we expect them to grow in popularity by adding more sports and continuing to have one of the strongest eSports offerings in the country.

Ontario Sports Betting - Beginners Guide

The launch of sports betting in Ontario has caught the attention of plenty, meaning more and more new customers are interested in seeing what this whole betting thing is all about.

If you're a newbie, this section is for you.

We've listed the steps needed to place a bet in the province, to help you get up and running.

Before the Ontario Betting Guide

The steps below serve as a general betting guide.

While actual processes may differ slightly from sportsbook to sportsbook, the steps below are largely applicable to sports betting sites in Ontario.

Found below are the steps required to place a bet in Ontario:

How to Get Started with Sports Betting in Ontario

1
Choose a Sportsbook

Here at My Betting Sites we’ve tasked ourselves with providing you with only the best when it comes to the sportsbooks on offer in Canada.

The same goes for the betting sites that have entered Ontario. If you’re unsure as to which betting site you should use, we’ve compiled a list of betting sites you can take a look at, as well as why they’d be a good fit for you. We've added a list of choosing criteria to help you select a sportsbook.

Ontario Sports Betting Step 1
2
Create an Account

Once you’ve chosen a betting site from the list of licensed operators in Ontario, the next step is to create an account with them.

You can do this by clicking on one of the claim buttons that you can find scattered across the site. These buttons have been included to ensure that you can easily access the betting sites we recommend.

Creating an account is as simple as entering a few personal details, and verifying your email.

Ontario Sports Betting Step 2
3
Make A Deposit

Once you’ve created your betting account, you’ll need to make a deposit to ensure that you can place some bets.

Depositing on betting sites is a straightforward procedure which involves choosing a deposit method, deciding upon an amount to deposit, and following a couple extra steps.

Most of the betting sites that are active in Canada, as well as those that will be entering Ontario accept deposit methods that are popular in the country, making your journey seamless.

Ontario Sports Betting Step 3
4
Get Informed

Once you’ve got money credited to your betting account, the next step in the process is to get in touch with the sport you’re looking to bet on.

There are a number of ways you can do this, but we usually recommend either taking a look at some betting tips, taking a look at the bets available or taking a look at a sports blog. Often sports blogs can be found on betting sites, and they tend to include tips within them.

Ontario Sports Betting Step 5
5
Make a Bet

Once you’ve learned a little more about the sport and event you’re looking to bet on, the last step in the process is to go ahead and make a bet.

There are a number of steps that are involved in this process, including choosing a sport and event, selecting the odds of the outcome you think will happen, and finally confirming your bet.

Placing a bet is fairly simple, but placing the right bet takes practice, a bit of luck, and a lot of due diligence.

Ontario Sports Betting Step 6

How to Choose a Sportsbook in Ontario

With more and more operators promising to enter Ontario, it’s quite possible that bettors may become overwhelmed with all the options that will be available.

Here at My Betting Sites, we’ve made it our mission to present only the best options.

We have been suggesting bookmakers to Canadians for years, and we’ve come up with a couple of tips and tricks to help you choose the sportsbooks that feel like the right fit for you.

Listed below, you can find some of the criteria that we measure betting sites against, which can in turn inform your decisions about choosing betting sites when the time comes.

Sportsbooks in Ontario have different strengths

It’s probably a good time to announce that no betting site will meet all of these requirements perfectly. Some betting sites prioritize certain features more than others.

This means that there's a book for every bettor, but the list below is the road map we follow to give you the best options.

Choosing a sportsbook in Ontario

📑 License

This aspect may be one that’s pretty straightforward, but when choosing between betting sites you’ll need to ensure that you’re choosing a betting site that is licensed in Ontario.

Betting sites that are licensed in Ontario will bear the AGCO and iGaming Ontario logos, which are usually located somewhere on the betting site’s homepage.

💯 Odds

Odds are always a big factor to consider when it comes to choosing a betting site because a bookie that consistently offers good odds has the promise of offering long term value.

If you’re new to betting, odds may be a little difficult to measure and compare yourself, but we make use of a margin calculator, to see what kind of value different sportsbooks are offering.

📊 Betting Lines

Betting lines refer to the different bet types that can be found on a sportsbook, and in this case, it’s the more the better.

Who doesn’t love having options?

With more betting lines comes more possibilities to win. More betting lines also mean more possibility to diversify your bets, which can make encounters far more interesting to follow.

☎️ Support

Support is another factor that holds great importance for users, both new and old.

If you’re having issues with your account, or with placing bets, you’ll want to know that a bookmaker’s support staff has your back.

Over the years, betting sites have become better at implementing more sophisticated support options for users - but it is still an area several betting sites could improve on.

💸 Payment Methods

Payment methods tend to be quite an underrated feature of betting sites that a number of people often overlook.

Not having access to the right payment methods will inevitably make your life more difficult, so make sure to check that the sportsbook you’re interested in accepts payments through methods that you’re familiar with, and feel comfortable using.

💫 Features

Features refer to all the nifty ways sportsbooks can make your life easier. Features involve everything from parlay builders and cash out to live streaming and betting tips.

With all the new betting sites that have begun popping out all over the show, there are plenty of new and exciting features available.

Features truly have the power to make or break a betting site.

Bet Types in Ontario

Since the emergence of sports on OLG’s lotteries in the 90s, Ontario residents were only able to access parlays bets legally.

While offshore sportsbooks were available, many people in the province felt a little uneasy using these platforms because they weren’t officially legal.

With the launch of the legal sports betting market, people in Ontario have access to far more options and lines than ever before.

Below, we’ve listed some of the bet types that residents of Ontario now have access to. Click on the arrow to view more information about the bet type that interests you:

Bet Types on Ontario Sportsbooks

Money Line

The money line is the most common bet type available on Ontario sportsbooks.

Simply choose between whether you think the home team will win, the away team will win, or whether the event will end in a draw.

Spread betting

Another highly popular and common bet type to become available to Ontario bettors, spread betting is a little harder to explain but can be best described as applying an advantage to a particular team.

When betting on the spread you’re essentially betting on one team to win or lose by a certain number of points. You’re betting on whether they will “cover the spread”.

So if a - 2.5 spread has been applied to the Eagles, and they beat the Commanders by 6, they will have covered the spread.

If you’re a newbie, we recommend sticking to the money line, and learning a bit more before you start betting on spreads.

Betting on totals is another common bet type found on Ontario sportsbooks, and refers to a bettor betting on the total points or goals scored in a game.

What’s important to remember is that totals refer to all points. We’ve had a few buddies in our time think that totals refer to a certain team, but if you bet on the 3.5 Totals for the Maple Leaves vs. The Senators, and the game would somehow end 2 - 2, you’d win your bet.

Periods

Popular in North American sports, betting on periods involves betting on a certain team to win a certain period in the game.

So if the Maple Leafs go into the second period 3 -2, and end the period at 3 -3, they would have won the second period, and if you had placed a bet on them winning the second, you would win your bet.

Parlays

A term Ontario residents may be a little too familiar with, parlays have been the go-to way to bet legally since the 90s.

Betting on parlays involves betting on a number of different outcomes with the same stake. You need all of your selections to be correct for the bet to win.

The truth is that Parlays can return great value, and on the betting sites available in Ontario, the value in terms of odds is far better.

You can see a small stake get turned into big winnings when betting on parlays, and while the odds are long, parlays can be exciting to follow.

Betting Features available in Ontario

A big talking point surrounding the entry of commercial sportsbooks into Ontario’s new market is the features users will now have available.

Proline did the job for many years, but never offered features like live streaming, cash out, same game parlays or boosts.

These features can now be found on most of the sportsbooks that can now be used in the province.

Below you can find a list of betting features that can be found on Ontario sportsbooks. Click on the arrows to find out more about each feature.

Betting Features on Ontario Sportsbooks

Live Streaming

Live streaming allows you to watch games as they happen, which can better inform your betting strategy.

Usually, all that is required of you is to create an account to access this feature, but in some cases, you’ll need to place a bet to watch some streaming.

Cash out/Partial Cash out

Another classic feature on a lot of international betting sites, cash-out enables you to reclaim some of your stake once you’ve claimed a bet.

Cash out ensures you a little more security, so that if that bet you placed is looking like its going sideways.

You can cash out your bets after your bet has been placed. Usually, there’ll be a button toward the bottom of your bet slip that says cash out, with the amount you’d be able to receive back.

Partial cash out follows the same model, where you’re able to claim back some of the stake, but this time around, you get to choose how much of your available stake you’d like to receive back.

Stats and Info

Whether you’ve been betting on parlays this whole time, or not, we all know that placing a winning bet feels a little like rocket science.

The good thing is that you’re not alone, it’s hard for everyone. That’s why a lot of betting sites have detailed blogs that include betting tips and news to keep you update.

These are the perfect resources to use when you’re not sure about which bets to place.

Same game parlays

Parlays are great, but we love to see a bookie that offers same game parlays.

Same game parlays allows you to bet on different lines within the same game.

You can bet on the Maple Leafs to win the game, score first, and for the total goals to be over 2.5 for example.

Ontario Sportsbooks with the Best Odds

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. Odds are crucial to betting, as they determine how much you stand to win from your bet.

This is another one of the big talking points surrounding the launch of Ontario’s legal sports betting market because quite simply, Proline’s odds were terrible.

With more operators coming into the fray, Ontario sportsbooks are offering great odds.

Here’s a list of the sportsbooks offering the best odds on the market:

How to make a bet in Ontario

Assuming that you’ve chosen a sportsbook, and have made a deposit at this point, here are the rest of the steps to place a bet on a sportsbook in Ontario:

  1. Choose your sport

  2. Choose your league

  3. Find your event

  4. Choose your odds

  5. Enter your stake

  6. Confirm your bet

As this may be a new process for a lot of you, we’ve listed a couple of questions that we typically run into in the betting process:

Betting in Ontario FAQs

How do I know if my bet has been placed?

Good question!

You can head over to the “open bets” tab to view any bets that you have placed.

How much money should I bet?

We’re not really in a position to tell you how much you should or shouldn’t bet.

All we can tell you is that we never advise placing an amount of money down that you’re unhappy parting ways with.

How do I select odds?

We feel this question has two real answers.

Physically selecting odds involves clicking in the little box that the odds are placed in.

Choosing which odds to select takes a little more intuition, which we feel is best aided by reading betting tips, sports articles and the like.

How do I know which bet to place?

This is again something that can be aided by the reading of betting tips or blogs that can be found on betting sites.

We aren’t a betting tips service, unfortunately, so we’re unable to help you here.

Which line should I bet on?

If you’re a newbie, we recommend betting on money lines to start off with.

As you gain more experience, you can start betting on more lines, and eventually make the jump to live betting.

Is it legal to bet in Ontario?

Yes!

Ontario's commercial sports betting market launched on the 4th of April 2022.

Ontario residents now have a variety of sportsbooks to choose from, with more and more operators set to acquire the license.

Ontario Sports Betting Legality

Betting in Ontario is governed by the online gambling branch of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, otherwise known as the AGCO. The official body responsible for regulating online gambling is known as iGaming Ontario.

All betting operators that are looking to enter the market will need to acquire a license from this overarching body if they want to offer sports betting legally in the province.

As it stands, a number of international bookmakers have acquired the Ontario license.

When it comes to the updated legal regulations, the new laws in Ontario are largely based on the passing of Bill C-218 (the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting act), which allows Canadian provinces to regulate themselves.

  • Below, you can find a breakdown of what the new laws in Ontario are aimed at achieving:

Key Tenets of Legal Ontario Sports Betting

🕵 Operators to Monitor Suspicious Activity

One of the areas that the AGCO wants operators to improve is when it comes to the monitoring of any suspicious activity.

The issuing of the Ontario license will be based on the tenet that operators will be expected to work in tandem with iGaming Ontario to highlight any suspicious activity.

At the end of the day, sportsbooks are financial institutions that handle large sums of money, which could lead to unsavoury characters using these services for the wrong reasons.

🙅 Prohibiting Insiders from Betting

iGaming Ontario has also tasked themselves with ensuring that insiders, in the forms of coaches, players, and referees are prevented from betting to ensure that sports games are kept free from the (not so) invisible hand of bias.

We’ve seen it a number of times in the past, players and referees have discarded their integrity to swing games for the promise of a large payout.

Part of the goal of the AGCO is to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

It’s clear that the AGCO made a statement when it issued out these updates in standards.

An interesting point is the prevention of insiders from betting, which we feel is crucial. A number of famous sporting personalities have traded integrity for monetary gain, but the AGCO’s vision to address this from the offset is brilliant.

Read on for some changes to the registrar's standards!

📝 Clear roles of Actors

Part of the update to Ontario sports betting legality is the clarification of the roles and responsibilities of the various actors and shareholders.

The main players in this regard are the operators - to make sure that they’re complying with the standards set out by the iGaming Ontario

iGaming Ontario has also taken these matters into their own hands by ensuring that they appoint “registered independent integrity monitors”.

💪 Strengthen select betting criteria

This point is touched on briefly by the AGCO, and mainly targets the age of event participants and certain financial type bets.

The main goal here is to ensure that betting criteria are kept fair, and within reach, so that betting operators don’t set ridiculous requirements for bettors to be able to withdraw their money.

✍️ Add to definitions

To ensure clarity when it comes to certain events, the AGCO aims to add sport, and event betting related definitions, to ensure all parties are aware of the options they have.

🎯 Improving advertising accuracy

This change revolves largely around the improvement of advertising practices to ensure that all advertising is in fact truthful, ensuring that all parties involved have all the information they need when consuming information.

iGaming Ontario has done a great job thus far in ensuring that sportsbooks will keep high standards when it comes to quality, integrity and transparency.

This simply translates into superior betting products for users, so if you’re a resident of Ontario, you have plenty to be excited about.

Some sportsbooks are notorious for promising a lot in their advertisements, only to make the small print ever so tiny.

The AGCO is committed to ensuring that you’ll know exactly what you’re signing up for before you sign up for it.

Single Game Betting Ontario

On the 27th of August 2021, Bill C-218, which would later become known as the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Bill was passed into law.

The law meant that individual provinces and territories would be able to regulate themselves, and the first province to take action in Canada was Ontario.

On the same day as the passing of the bill, OLG began offering single game wagers as part of ProLine and ProLine +.

While this was a big happening for provincial sports betting in Ontario, many bettors in the province had become well versed in betting on single events on offshore bookmakers.

Offshore bookmakers have come to exist in a very much accepted grey area in Canada, however, the launch of the new licensing system is aimed at ensuring that provinces are able to regulate and issue licenses themselves.

Essentially, what the passing of Bill C-218 meant was that sports bettors in Ontario had access to more options - through ProLine, as well as through offshore betting sites.

  • Aside from Proline, listed below are some of the operators who have received the iGaming Ontario license:

What’s Next for Online Sports Betting in Ontario

It’s difficult to conclusively say what will be next for Ontario Sports Betting.

What we are expecting is that more and more operators will begin setting up their products within Ontario, and we expect that the rest of Canada will follow suit.

It’s been predicted that Ontario will become one of the biggest provincial markets for sports betting in North America, which is predicted to generate nearly a billion dollars within its first year of existence.

All we can say is that it’s going to be very interesting to see how everything plays out!

Offshore bookmakers, as well as homegrown Canadian betting sites will need to acquire the Ontario license if they want to operate legally in the province.

The AGCO ( Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) has set out to ensure consumer protection, increase growth in the legal market, generate provincial revenues, and reduce red tape.

Based on words from the Canadian government, the end goal of the new legal implementation is to ensure that gambling money is kept in Canada.
