Once that’s been done, you’ll need to create an account, and then make a deposit through one of the available payment methods. How to Bet on the World Cup in 7 Steps
Choosing a bookmaker can be done by looking at, it and then clicking on “PLAY NOW” from the list of books found just below. All of them offer something slightly different, so be mindful of what you’re looking for when choosing a betting site.
Here’s a little run down of what is offered by the top 3:
Once you’ve chosen a sportsbook, and haven’t yet set up an account with them, you’ll need to create one in order to make a deposit, and eventually place bets.
To create an account, simply click on one of the “PLAY NOW” buttons found in our lists, which will direct you to the subsequent sportsbook landing page.
From there, you can click on one of the calls to action to create an account. In some cases they may appear in the form of “SIGN UP”, but in other cases, it may be “BET NOW”. Clicking on one of them will direct you to fields for personal information. Fill in the details with accurate information, and verify your account via your email or via text.
Once you’ve created an account, and are logged into your account, you’ll need to go ahead and make a deposit through one of the payment methods available.
To do so, click on the button that says “DEPOSIT”, choose the payment method that you trust, enter the amount you would like to deposit and follow the remaining instructions as set out by the bookmaker.
That’s all it takes to load up your betting account with some dollars!
Now that you’re well set up to start placing bets, head over to the soccer tab. This can usually be found in the sidebar to the left of the bookmaker (if you’re on a desktop), or it can be found under an all sports tab if you’re on mobile/an app.
Choose soccer from the sports available, and then go ahead and navigate to the book’s dedicated World Cup section. Some sportsbooks may have a dedicated tab for the World Cup, while on others it can be found under “International”.
Once you’ve found the World Cup page on the sportsbook you’ve chosen, the next step is to go ahead and choose the event you’re looking to bet on.
This can be a specific game, or who will be outright winners of the event. There is a specific tab dedicated to the outright winners of the tournament. Each of the upcoming games however can be found on the World Cup page. If you select a game (by clicking on the row it is held within), you’ll be able to see all the markets that are offered such as money lines, totals and more.
We're dedicated sections on this page to explain how to bet on each of the top lines that will be offered on all sportsbooks during the World Cup.
Once you’ve taken a look at some of the games available, and have a good idea of which one/s you’d like to bet on, click on the event you’d like to start betting on to open up the dedicated tab that holds all of the lines available.
We recommend browsing all of the lines available, and making a calculated decision based on your knowledge of the game, and your knowledge of the teams that are coming up against one another. Once done, simply click on the odds that represent the probability of the the outcome you think will occur.
Once you’ve done all the hard work, the last step in the process is to go ahead and open up your bet slip and set the amount you would like to bet on the outcome. We usually advise that bettors shouldn’t bet more than they’re willing to lose, and we stand by that wholeheartedly.
Once you’ve entered your stake, the last step in the process is to confirm your bet, by clicking on the large button found at the bottom of the bet slip. Once that’s done, you will have successfully placed a bet on the World Cup!

Alex, how do you place money line bets?
I like to have a bit of fun with my money line bets. I try looking for value, but I also like to bet on the team I don't want to win. Seems weird, but that way, if the team I want to win, wins, I'll be happy, and if the team I don't want to win wins, I'll win my bet. I like to make my money line bets with Betway.

World Cup Money Line Bets - Top Tips
- When choosing odds, you choose who you think will win
While this may be a no-brainer for seasoned bettors, if you’re betting for the first time, keep in mind that when you choose a team, you’re choosing that team to be the winner. So if you choose odds for a team, and they’re not the winner, you won’t win your bet. If you choose a team to be the match winner, and they are the winner, then you’ll win.
- Don’t bet more than you’re willing to lose
We’re primarily here to help you find a bookie and bet for a good time. Part of recreational betting is ensuring that you don’t set stakes that are more than you are willing to lose.
That is of course dependent on different people and levels of income, but it comes down to one principle. If you’re not happy with parting with $100 then don’t bet $100 on an event.
- Do some background research
An age-old tactic to boost your betting strategy is to study up before you make a bet. This way you can see which teams are in form, which teams perform better in certain weather, which players are injured and so on.
- Bet with your head, not your heart
While it’s exciting to see Canada back in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, remember that your bets should be calculated, and not just for the sake of backing your team. We’re not saying don’t bet on Canada, but do so in a smart way.
- Don’t be afraid of betting on parlays
It’s the World Cup. There are a lot of games. One fun way to be invested in a number of them is to bet on Parlays. The tricky thing with parlays is that they’re hard to win, but the fun part is that betting on parlays can be a great way to turn a small stake into big winnings if you manage to win them all.
How to Bet on World Cup Over/Unders (Totals)
To bet on the over/unders (or Total Goals) line in the World Cup, navigate to the soccer tab on the bookmaker, find and click on the World Cup, and find a game that interests you. Once that’s done, click on the event that interests you to see all of the lines show up. Navigate to the totals (or “Goals” on some books) filter, and click on it, select whether you think the game will end with over the number of goals forecasted, or under by clicking on the subsequent odds. Lastly, set your stake, and confirm your bet.
Steps to bet on World Cup Overs/Unders (Totals)
- Find & click on the soccer tab & find the World Cup
- Find the game that interests you & click on it
- Filter by “Totals” or “Goals” (dependant on the book)
- Select your odds
- Set your stake & confirm your bet
The image above displays the process required to place totals bets on Betway. The process is largely similar across all betting sites. Click on the image to enlarge it.
Ben, how do you place Totals Bets?
Totals are tricky, so I always think about where teams are at when they meet, and who they have at their disposal. If I know France has Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe leading the line, and they've been averaging 3 goals a game recently, that would influence my totals to bet.
While Alex is a bit of a Betway fanatic, and he's made all of these how-to bet graphics revolving around Betway, I actually use Bet365 for my totals bets.

Betting on Totals - Our Top tips
- Overs/Unders & Totals are the same thing
If you’re looking to bet on totals, and see an overs/unders tab, or if you’re looking to bet on overs/unders and find a totals tab, take a breath, and know that they’re the exact same thing.
When you bet on a total line, you’re betting on whether the number of goals scored will be over the forecasted amount, or under the forecasted amount, so they’re the same thing.
- You’re betting on the total goals for both teams
Always keep in mind that you’re betting on the goals scored by both teams when betting on this line. So if you bet on under 3.5, and one team scored 3, and the other scores 1, then you would lose your bet, because while both teams score less than 3.5 goals, the total goals for the game are 4, which is over 3.5, and not the outcome you bet on.
- Get a read on who teams have at their disposal
This falls into the category of doing your homework but is a little more specific. If you see France can call upon Kylian Mbappe, and Karim Benzema, you may be inclined to bet on a bigger total than on a lesser one.
The same applies to the defensive lines ups and more defensive-minded players who may play in the midfield. It’s always a good idea to know who’s going to be playing to determine the goals that may possibly be scored.
- Get a read on the weather forecasts
The weather can be a great leveller, and with football, the case is no different. While Qatar is not a nation that is known for experiencing heavy rainfall, the rain, in particular, can make games interesting, and can either lead to more, or fewer opportunities for attackers. Keep the weather in mind, and think about how it might positively or negatively affect a team’s goal-scoring chances.
How to Bet on World Cup Outrights
To bet on World Cup outrights, navigate to the soccer tab on the bookmaker you have an account with and have been logged into. Navigate to the World Cup tab, and click on it. From there, you will see a tab labelled “Outrights”. Find which outright bet type you’d like to bet on and select it. From there, choose the team or player you think will be the outright winner click on the odds, set your stake, and confirm your bet.
How to bet on World Cup outrights in 5 steps
- Navigate and click on the soccer tab
- Click on “World Cup 2022”
- Identify the team/player you think will be the outright winner
- Select your odds
- Enter your stake and confirm your bet
In the image, you can take a look at the journey required to place an outright winner bet on Betway. The process is largely similar across all books. Click on the image to enlarge it.
Alex, how do you like to bet on Outrights?
I never like going for outright favourites unless it's the Premier League or the Bundesliga. The favourite this year for the World Cup in Brazil, and it's a bet I won't make. It's tough to make outright bets from the offset, but you can get a bit of an understanding from their performances leading up to the World Cup, who their in-form players are, and so on.
Yes, as Ben may have pointed out, I like Betway, but I've actually grown to prefer Leovegas for outright bets. You can try them yourself through the green "PLAY NOW" button below!

World Cup Outright bets - Our Top Tips
- Outrights exist for a number of categories
While it’s most popular to bet on the outright champions of the tournament, you can also bet on things like the tournament’s leading goal scorers, leading assisters, and so on.
Make sure you’re mindful of all of the options you have, and also keep in mind that if a team doesn’t make it past the groups, it’s unlikely that their players will receive these highly coveted awards.
- Take a look at past competitions
It’s always a good idea to take a look at past competitions. Not just the world cup, but also the Euros, the Africa Cup of Nations, and so on.
These competitions can provide useful information about which teams perform on the big stage, and how well they soak up the pressure that is on them.
- Take a look at players that perform at the WC
When we wrote this point, we thought about Miroslav Klose. The German striker was deadly in front of the goal for the German national team, but when he went back to ply his trade for whichever club he was part of at the time, he was a little bit forgettable.
Keep in mind the players that tend to perform really well at big tournaments like the World Cup, think about who they play for, and track their progress. You could have options for outright bets with players like this.

To be honest, there is no real best way to bet on the World Cup. For us here at my betting sites, betting should be about having fun, so if it gets to a point where you’re not having fun anymore, that’s a bit of a red flag.
Otherwise, the choice is yours, matchwinner bets (money lines) can at times be the best, totals can be the best, and outrights can be the best too if that’s more your thing.
Just keep in mind the value of applying some effort to your betting strategy by doing a little bit of research.

As it currently stands, Brazil appears to be the favourite to win the competition outright in Qatar.
This can of course change as the tournament rolls out. Take a look at our dedicated world cup favourites article for the full picture at the moment.
Realistically speaking, Canada would do incredibly well to get through the Group Stage. They’re in a group that consists of Belgium, Croatia and Morroco. The clear favourites to enter the next round of the World Cup Round of 16 are Belgium and Croatia, but if there’s one thing Canada has proven in the qualifiers is that they’re capable of winning, and upsetting big names.
It’s hard to say, and while we’ve said what we've said, we feel that Canada will be knocked out in the Group Stage.
Ordered from the best down, here are the best betting sites for the World Cup in 2022:
- Betway
- Bet365
- 888Sport
- LeoVegas
- Royal Panda
- Coolbet
- Comeon!
- Casumo
- BetVictor
- Bwin
- Sports Interaction
You can read more about all of them on our dedicated world cup betting sites article, which ranks and reviews the list of 11.
We’re not really in a position to tell you which bets to make, because we’re experts on sportsbooks and what they provide and not experts on betting.
But we can say this, if you feel that Canada can win a game, then bet on them. If you think a game that Canada will take part in a game that will exceed or end below a certain number of goals, then make that bet. Trust your intuition and don’t bet more than you’re willing to lose, and don't bet with your heart alone.
This is largely a matter of opinion, but we like money lines a lot. Totals can also be fun, and outrights can give the entire competition a fun twist for the bettor.
The question you should be asking, is which is my favourite betting line, can I find it on the sportsbook, and does it make sense for me to bet on it?
