Online prediction markets currently believe that New York's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is the most likely person to receive the highlight this year, with 33% of users voting yes.
Other leading candidates are Pope Leo XIV with 20% and Donald Trump at 13%.

A common misconception with Time magazine's award is that it is awarded as recognition of an individual's good deeds. The Person of the Year is decided solely to highlight an individual or object that has had the most influence in the news and our lives, bad or good.
The only other constant with who is nominated for the highlight, should it be a person, is that they must still be alive. A few past Time of the Year selections have had readers imploring the magazine to consider posthumously recognizing individuals who's deaths had significant impacts on the year of their passing. Examples being president John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. However, to this day, Time has continued to follow their tradition of selecting those that are still present.
Beyond these criteria's, there's very little insight as to how the Person of the Year is decided. Time has even stated that the decision is ambiguous even within their newsroom, with the announcement released early to prevent any leaks from ruining the surprise.

Online markets believe the individual who had the most influence in the news, and our daily lives, is Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani, New York City's mayor who was elected to office earlier this year, has been the center of controversy in the news amidst the U.S.'s continued divide between progressives and conservatives.
Mamdani has been an advocate of socialist programs and progressive ideologies, pushing forward programs such as affordable grocery stores providing goods at lowered costs subsidized by the state.
In a country where even the left sits right of center, individuals touting socialist programs and policies that benefit individuals over corporations are almost always politicized and become the center of attention in the news.
Although his policies are only relevant to those living in the New York City, his actions have been criticized by those living on the opposite side of the country. His opposition has even led to requests that action be taken against Mamdani, such as Republican Congressman Andy Ogles going as far as calling for the mayor to be denaturalized and deported.
Mandani has also concerned himself with one of the most controversial topics of the past two years, the conflict between Israel and Palestine. His position on the matter has polarized his support even further, with disinformation circulating that his policies are direct attacks on the Jewish people of New York City.
Regardless of whether or not his time as mayor has had a positive overall impact, it's hard to argue that he hasn't been one of the more discussed figures in both U.S. culture and politics this past year.
Why Zohran Mamdani Shouldn't Be Time's Person of the Year
Mamdani has been a popular topic in the U.S., but it's also true that his impact had been limited to just New York City. The person of the Year nomination tends to go to individuals or groups that have had a global impact, making it difficult to compare Mamdani to previous selections at this point in time.
With just nine months as the mayor of NYC, it's also hard to measure the full scope of his impact. Many of the programs and policies initiated by Mamdani are novel to the state of NY, and it will be some time before we can analyze the results.
His influence on progressives throughout the U.S. has also yet to be seen. Will the midterms see an increase in support for democrats running behind socialist policies or will the current status quo continue?
In a country that continues to vote against universal healthcare, it's hard to imagine that a single mayor will have the impact needed to change the political landscape of the United States.
The midterms approaching in November will be a good starting point to gauge how voters in America have reacted to Mamdani's time in New York. For now, it's just too early to justify his consideration as this year's Person of the Year.
