Three concerns that could decide LeBron James’ next team - Markets point towards the Warriors

Current betting markets favour the Warriors as LeBron James’ next team, but Miami and the possibility of a Cavaliers farewell tour have added intrigue to his offseason decision. Here’s what the latest markets are saying about where LeBron could play during the 2026-27 NBA season.

Where Will Lebron James be signing for the 2027 season?

With recent rumours linking the Warriors to a potential trade for Anthony Davis, speculation has started to build around whether Golden State could also make a push for LeBron James this offseason.

Could he return to Cleveland for the final years of his NBA career? Or will he join Anthony Davis and Stephen Curry on the Warriors, creating one of the most entertaining teams to watch next season?

Before LeBron James makes his decision, we take a closer look at the factors shaping all three potential destinations and what current betting markets are saying about where he could land next.

Current Markets Favour The Warriors

Current betting market predictions list the Warriors as the most likely destination for LeBron James next season, with Golden State holding a 46% implied probability.

The Warriors have seen the biggest shift in recent days. After Draymond Green declined his player option, Golden State reportedly gained more financial flexibility to pursue LeBron, while reports have also linked the Warriors to a potential Anthony Davis trade. That has helped push the Warriors from just 1% to 46% in the market.

Other destinations include the Caveliers at 37% and the Miami Heat at 18%.

Warriors Emerge As A Viable LeBron Landing Spot

With Draymond Green declining his player option, reports have suggested that the Warriors could be preparing for an aggressive offseason swing.

Golden State has been linked to a potential Anthony Davis trade, with Jimmy Butler and draft compensation reportedly viewed as possible pieces in a deal.

On its own, the move would make sense for the Warriors. Davis would give Golden State a defensive anchor in Green's absence, a proven interior scorer, and a frontcourt presence that could immediately raise the team’s ceiling.

However, the bigger angle is what a Davis trade could mean for LeBron James. Reports have suggested that the Warriors’ pursuit of Davis may also be tied to their hopes of luring LeBron to Golden State, where he could reunite with one of his closest former teammates while also joining Stephen Curry.

The appeal makes sense for LeBron. James and Davis have proven chemistry from their time together with the Lakers, while Curry would give him another all-time great offensive partner in the final stage of his career.

If the Warriors were able to build a core around Curry, Davis, Green, and James, they would immediately become one of the most entertaining teams to watch next season.

Golden State could also be LeBron's clearest path to chasing one final ring before retirement. The financial side would still require major sacrifices and roster maneuvering, but if LeBron is prioritizing another title run, the Warriors would be difficult to ignore.

There is also the personal side to consider. A move to Golden State would allow LeBron to remain in California, where his family has been based for years.

All in all, the combination of a real chance at a title, familiarity with Davis, and staying close to home could make the Warriors one of the more viable destinations if he decides to leave the Lakers.

Cavaliers Remain The Sentimental Retirement Option

The second most likely destination for LeBron James this offseason would be a return to the Cavaliers, where he could finish his career with the franchise most closely tied to his legacy as “the kid from Akron.”

As the player most responsible for bringing Cleveland its only NBA championship, and with his roots still deeply connected to Ohio, LeBron remains the most beloved legacy player in Cavaliers history.

Retiring with the Cavs would make a lot of sense emotionally and would give Cleveland fans one final chance to celebrate the greatest player their franchise has ever had. However, the basketball side of the decision is more complicated.

The Cavaliers have made real progress in recent years, building themselves back into a consistent playoff threat in the Eastern Conference. Signing LeBron would likely require financial concessions and may not necessarily be the best long-term decision for the franchise.

Cleveland would also be far from a guaranteed title contender, even with LeBron joining the roster. If he returned to the Cavaliers, he may have to accept that he is prioritizing legacy and a full-circle ending over one final serious push for another title.

The decision may come down to whether LeBron and the Cavaliers view a return as a one-season farewell tour. For now, there has been no clear indication that LeBron intends to retire after the upcoming season, leading us to believe this outlook is more of a sentimental consideration rather than a viable option.

LeBron Says Farewell To The Lakers

On Tuesday, LeBron and his team informed the Lakers that he will not be returning with the team next season.

For the Lakers right now, the biggest concern is how the front office can continue to build around Luka Doncic.

With LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard projected to sign elsewhere, Los Angeles will have several crucial roster decisions to make.

The Lakers have already taken care of one major piece by reportedly agreeing to a four-year, $185 million contract with Austin Reaves, while DeAndre Ayton has picked up his player option for the 2026-27 season.

Beyond these recent moves, concerns remained with whether the Lakers had done enough to build a strong starting lineup around Luka, let alone address the depth concerns that have followed them over the past few seasons.

If LeBron is focused on maximizing what remains of his NBA career, the current uncertainty around Hachimura, Smart, Kennard, and the team’s supporting cast is a real issue.

Staying with the Lakers could have still provided him with a path to compete, but it's now clear that the team hasn't done enough to convince him.
