Alberta's First Ever Private iGaming Market

For the very first time, Albertans have access to legal sports betting options and online casinos other than the province-run platform, PlayAlberta.

Previously, PlayAlberta remained the only legal betting platform available in the province, with hundreds of other betting sites which operated within Canada's grey market.

These offshore sites were able to accept Canadian players through offshore licenses, such as the Malta Gaming Authority.

Now, through Alberta, Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), as well as the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), operators must acquire licensing in order to accept players in Alberta.

The licensing agreement greatly benefits players in Alberta, providing stronger player protections, improved responsible gambling tools, local oversight, continued regulation, and increased competition for better offerings and value.

AiGC Approved Sites As of July 13

With the first batch of AiGC approved sites going live at midnight this Monday, a total of 9 betting sites and 13 online casinos have been made available so far.

The iGaming Registrants document provided by the AGLC lists an additional 11 betting sites and 20+ online casinos, which should become available in the following days and weeks.

AiGC Approved Sports Betting Sites:

  • Bet365
  • BetMGM

More Betting Sites To Come

As mentioned, the previous sites listed are options currently approved by the Alberta iGaming Corporation. As the rollout continues, more sites are expected to appear on the AiGC's website, which are already registered with the AGLC.

Should Alberta's iGaming market prove successful, bettors can expect even more operators to seek licensing in the province.

Currently there are 20 betting sites and 30+ online casinos registered, similar in scale as to what Ontario started out with back in 2022.

Today, Ontario offers 33 betting sites and 80+ online casinos, which provides a possible glimpse to the number of options Alberta may offer in the near future.

  • BallyBet
  • Monopoly Sportsbook & Casino
