Bet365 is New Zealand’s most popular online bookmaker, behind the TAB, and it’s easy to see why. Bet365 has the most NZ and world sports betting markets of any online bookie. They also have consistently high odds, the most live-streaming options, and an easy-to-claim welcome bonus for Kiwis. Like any serious bookie, Bet365 accepts NZ dollar card and bank transfer deposits and their withdrawals are processed either instantly or within 2-3 days (depending on the method you chose).
TAB NZ
What is the TAB NZ & why are thousands of New Zealanders already using alternative sports betting sites for their odds & bets?
“The New Zealand Racing Board has found it difficult to compete against offshore gambling operators in the online market because competitors offer better odds, a bigger product range and better services. As a result, a growing number of New Zealanders are placing bets with offshore betting agencies.” - Beehive Report, Oct 2015.

Overall, the breadth of markets offered by 22bet beats almost every other betting site with their Esports, TV and entertainment markets being especially strong.
TAB NZ
For a long time the TAB NZ has been the most popular sports betting organisation in New Zealand. Despite this, more and more New Zealanders are choosing to ditch the TAB NZ in favour of other NZ sports betting sites.
This is because other bookmakers almost always have higher odds, more sports markets, superior sign-up bonuses and better betting promotions, making them much more attractive than the TAB NZ.
TAB NZ - Frequently Asked Questions
Alternative bookmakers to the TAB NZ are becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand but many Kiwis still have questions about the TAB NZ and why they should consider looking elsewhere for their racing odds and sports bets.
TAB stands for Totaliser Agency Board and is the name that was given to Australia and New Zealand's betting (or totalisator) organisations when they were set up by the government.
A totalisator (or tote board) is the large betting/odds display board that you can find at race tracks.
The TAB is independently run but is heavily regulated and overseen by the Department of Internal Affairs.
In August 2020, TAB NZ took control of New Zealand's racing industry from RITA (the Racing Industry Transition Agency). RITA replaced the NZRB (New Zealand Racing Board) in 2019 and its purpose was to "enable the urgent changes required to drive the racing industry toward a financially sustainable future."
TAB NZ also runs TAB Trackside (the racing channel) and its revenue is generated from both TAB betting and TAB Trackside subscriptions.
There are plenty of NZ betting sites with bettor odds, more markets and bigger bonuses than the TAB NZ.
We reckon that the best TAB NZ alternatives are:
- Bet365 - The most betting markets, highest odds and most live streaming options
- Betway - Great bet builder, generous free bets and tons of NZ sports
- 888sport - Generous sign up bonus, competitive odds, plenty of features
- LeoVegas - The best betting app in New Zealand
- 22Bet - $250 welcome bonus and the most payment options in New Zealand
No, in almost all situations the TAB NZ doesn't have the best odds. As to where you can find the best sports betting odds - there is no single answer to this question as all of the sites that we review have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Bet365, Betway and 888sport consistently have the best odds, especially when you consider their boosts, multipliers and other promotional offers. Guts and LeoVegas are also great options for football and esports betting respectively.
Yes!
All of the betting sites that we review are licensed and regulated in the countries that they are based. That means that they are legitimate companies and must follow the local laws in their home countries.
New Zealand does not restrict the use of online betting sites like Bet365, Betway and 888sport because these sites do not operate from within New Zealand. This means that they are legally allowed to offer sports betting to Kiwis, in New Zealand Dollars. Thousands of Kiwis, like us, already use these sites because they offer better odds and more betting options.
Only sometimes. The TAB provides lots of racing odds for New Zealand racing fields but these aren't always the best odds available.
We have found that some of the best horse racing betting sites like Bet365 and 888sport often have better odds for NZ races.
This is especially true for big NZ racing weekends like for the Auckland Cup Week and the New Zealand Cup and also for oversees racing markets. Both of these bookies also offer best price guarantees for UK and Irish racing markets and have live streaming options available for Kiwi punters.
Bet365 has the widest range of sports markets available for Kiwi players. This includes both NZ and international sports from domestic NZ cricket to Polish Table Tennis and FIFA World Cup football.
The next best-betting sites in terms of NZ and world-sports offerings are Betway and 888sport followed by LeoVegas and 22bet.
The TAB also has a lot of sports markets but it can't compete with these big international players.
The TAB has a mobile app that can be downloaded from the App Store or from the Google Play store but after trying all of the NZ betting site apps available we actually prefer some of the others.
The LeoVegas app is particularly good, and it has won multiple awards. Bet365 also has a great app which is perfect for live streaming NZ and international sports matches.
No, but kind of. TAB NZ and TAB Australia are both betting agencies with a horse racing focus but they are completely separate entities.
All New Zealand TAB's are government-owned whereas most Australian TAB's are now privately owned.
Yes. New Zealand's Gambling Act (2003) allows New Zealander's to bet and gamble online with any of the betting sites that we recommend. These sites have millions of worldwide customers and are completely safe to use.
TAB NZ - Learn More
Our team of Kiwi betting experts reviews the best betting sites in New Zealand
This page is dedicated to the TAB NZ but you'll also find plenty of information on the alternative bookmakers that we recommend.
Above we have listed some of the top alternative betting sites to the TAB but if you keep scrolling you'll find a review and overview of the TAB NZ with information on TAB NZ racing, TAB NZ odds and TAB NZ's History.
The TAB's daily racing fields, odds and results are a huge feature of the TAB NZ website. TAB NZ also has around 550 physical locations throughout New Zealand where punters can watch Trackside and other live sports. You can use the buttons below to learn more.
TAB NZ Overview
TAB New Zealand
The TAB (Totalisator Agency Board) is New Zealand's only on-shore sports and racing betting agency. The TAB has been around since 1951 following a 1949 law change that allowed off-course betting in NZ. At this time, the TAB was the world's first governemnet-run totalisator wagering service.
Since then the TAB has grown from being a solely racing betting organization to offering thousands of NZ and international bets every day from 31 different sports. The TAB also runs Trackside, the horse racing channel in NZ, and has over 550 physical stores. The TAB's phone betting service was once popular but now most Kiwis prefer to use the TAB app.
Ways to bet with TAB NZ
The TAB has a monopoly over all New Zealand's on-shore betting which means it is the only NZ bookmaker that can have physical shops in New Zealand. When it come to online betting, the TAB faces tough competition from offshore sports betting websites and betting apps.
- Raceday betting at racetracks
- Physical stores
- Phone betting via TAB call centres
- Betting website
- Mobile Apps
Why we like the TAB NZ ✅
- The TAB contributes to grassroots NZ sport
- The TAB has good NZ racing offerings
NZ TAB Pros
One of the cool things about the TAB, like Lotto and Instant Kiwi, is that some of the money that you lose goes to supporting grassroots NZ sports and racing. After the TAB's 500+ staff receive their salaries, some of the TAB's profit is re-invested in the community. So, in a sense, when you lose with the TAB you are helping young Kiwi athletes.
The TAB began as a racing betting agency and this focus has stuck with them today. This means that all NZ racing fields are covered by the TAB.
The TAB has a huge market share in NZ which means that its odds are often not as good as some other racing betting sites, especially 888sport, Bet365 and LeoVegas which all offer best price guarantees for UK and Irish horse racing. However, you will still always find all NZ horse races on the TAB.
What we don’t like about TAB NZ ❌
- The TAB's odds are not good
- The TAB's sports offerings are limited
- Payment methods are expensive and limited
NZ TAB Cons
The TAB has a lot of customers in NZ but compared to some of the big sports betting companies out there they have very few customers. This means that their odds are often pretty poor as they just can't compete with the big-name bookies. The TAB's bad odds mean that your payouts and winnings are smaller with the TAB than they would be with other sportsbooks.
The TAB also can't compete with the range of sports offered by some of the popular sports betting sites that we recommend. Other sites have more sports, more countries, and more bets for specific sports than the TAB does. This means that multipliers and bets that you build are limited with the TAB and you have to stick to fewer betting options.
TAB payment methods are limited to Visa Card, Master Card and Mobile Banking/Online Banking. There is also a $2.15 fee for all Credit/Debit Card deposits. When you consider the range of payment methods that some of the bookmakers that we review offer, you see that the TAB falls short.
All of the sites that we review have no deposit and withdrawal fees and common payment methods include Visa Card, Master Card, Neteller, Skrill, PaySafe card, Poli and plenty more.
TAB NZ Verdict 👨⚖
The TAB is the most recognizable name for New Zealand sports betting and racing betting however we have found that the TAB falls short in many areas compared to offshore betting sites. For better odds, more sports markets, additional payments options, superior mobile apps and more generous bonuses check out some of the other online betting companies that we recommend on MyBettingSites NZ.

TAB NZ Racing
There are 69 thoroughbred (gallops) clubs, 51 harness (trotting and pacing) clubs and 12 greyhound clubs that are licensed to race in New Zealand and there are over 10,000 individual races each year.
Horse racing bets vary and there are plenty of slang terms which can be confusing to new punters.
The TAB NZ Racing offerings are extensive for NZ races but the number of international markets and the overall odds are not as good as on other NZ betting websites
Some of the most common TAB NZ racing bet types are:
- Win - You pick the winner of the race. If they win, so do you.
- Place - You pick a horse to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Sometimes in races with less than eight runners place just means 1st or 2nd.
- Each way - You pick a horse to win and place. For example, a $5 each way bet is essentially one $5 bet on a horse to win and one $5 bet on the same horse to place.
- Quinella - You pick which horses will come 1st and 2nd in any order. A boxed quinella allows you to pick more horses than just two however, the more horses that are in your box, the more your bet will cost.
- Trifecta - Is like a quinella but you pick the first three horses in the correct order. A trifecta can also be boxed.
- First four - Is like a trifecta or quinella but you pick the first four horses in the correct order. A First4 can also be boxed and is sometimes called a superfecta.
- Double - You pick the winner of two consecutive races. You will win the Double Dividend if both of your picks win but you can still win the Concession Dividend if your first pick wins and your second pick comes second.
What is the difference between fixed and tote betting at the TAB New Zealand?
With Fixed odds, or Final Field odds, the odds that you get when you place your bet will be the odds that any of your winnings are multiplied by at the end of the race.
Tote betting odds change right up until the moment before the race. With tote betting, everyone's money goes into a pool and at the end of the race, only the winning selections are paid out from the pool of money. This means popular horses will return less while unpopular horses will return more.
Some of the biggest racing events in New Zealand are the Auckland Cup, New Zealand Derby, Karaka Million, New Zealand Guineas and New Zealand Oaks. Some of the biggest racetracks are Ellerslie (Auckland), Trentham (Wellington) and Riccarton (Christchurch).

TAB NZ Sports
The TAB offers Kiwis a lot of sports markets to bet on but for each match, there are often a lot fewer options than other betting sports betting sites offer.
Betway and Bet365 are both excellent alternative betting sites to the TAB.
For example, Betway offers over 30,000 sports markets every year and a range of betting options from simple win/loss bets, to specials, futures, margins, handicaps and much, much more.
Both Betway and Bet365 also offer plenty of specials and promotions like money back bets, increased odds offers, early payout bonuses and free bets.
The range of sports offered on TAB NZ is pretty small compared to bigger international bookmakers

TAB NZ Odds
The default odds displayed on the TAB site are decimal odds. Some American odds are also displayed.
In general, we have found that the TAB's odds are some of the worst available on the internet. This is largely because they can't compete with big international sports betting sites that have many more customers and are much more profitable.
If you are looking for the best odds, stay away from the TAB
Maximising your odds means maximising your winnings and increasing your payouts. That is why it's so important to choose a bookmaker with the best odds.
For example, let's say that the TAB was offering 8.00 odds for the Blues to win Super Rugby Aotearoa while Bet365 was offering 10.00 odds for the same bet. A $50 winning bet would return $350 profit from the TAB while the same bet would return $450 profit from Bet365.
In this example, you can easily earn an extra $100 just by choosing the best sports betting odds from the best betting site.
All of the betting sites that we review have great odds.
Betting Odds Explained
Decimal Odds Explained
To calculate your payout from a bet using decimal odds you need to multiply your bet amount by the decimal odds amount. To calculate your profit, simply take your total winning payout amount and subtract your bet amount.
Bet Amount: $100.00
Decimal Odds: 2.50
Winning Payout: $100.00 x 2.50 = $250.00
Profit: $205.00 - $100.00 = $105.00
Fractional Odds Explained
To calculate your winnings from a bet using fractional odds you need to multiply your bet amount by the top number on the fractional odds amount and then divide that by the bottom number on the fractional odds amount.
Bet Amount: $100.00
Fractional Odds: 3/2
Profit: $100.00 x 3/2 = $300.00/2 = $150.00
American Odds Explained
When you bet on an underdog the American odds are always based on the winnings for a given $100 bet.
Bet Amount: $100.00
American Odds: 150
Profit: $150.00
If you are instead betting on a favourite, the American odds will have a minus sign in the front which represents the money you need to risk to win $100.
Bet Amount: $150.00
American Odds: -150
Profit: $100.00
TAB NZ App
The TAB NZ betting app is available for free on the App Store and via the TAB website for Android devices. It can be used on both Apple and Android devices.
The TAB app is pretty good and like all of our favourite NZ sports betting apps it has live streaming capabilities, cashout options and live betting.
However, we get the impression that the TAB app is just a mobile version of their website.
When we compare the TAB app with other betting apps, like the LeoVegas sports betting app or the Bet365 betting app we think it falls a little short.
This is because both LeoVeags and Bet365 designed their betting sites with a mobile-first approach. This means that their betting apps do not only look good, but they are easy to navigate, intuitive and simple.
The LeoVegas app is a great alternative sports betting app to the TAB app
TAB NZ Betting App Alternative
Best NZ Betting App
- Mobile-First Approach: LeoVegas has always been a 'mobile-first' betting company which means that their betting app is their top priority.
- Winner of Many Awards: LeoVegas has won plenty of awards for their app, brand, mobile site, operations and innovation.
- Live Betting and Live Streaming: LeoVegas' live-streaming options are plentiful, with over 10,000 live matches every year, cash-out options, live statistics and ever-changing odds, there's plenty to keep Kiwi punters happy.

TAB New Zealand Online
Most punters who haven't downloaded the TAB NZ app use the TAB New Zealand's online website. As far as betting websites go it's relatively straightforward to use.
At the top of the page, you'll be able to navigate between Racing, Sport, In-Play and Punters Lounge depending on what you're after. You can also log in or sign up with the TAB New Zealand here.
On the main page of the TAB NZ online website, you'll see the current live featured matches and the win/loss odds for these matches. By selecting a market you can see all of the options available.
On the left-hand side of the TAB NZ website screen, there is a menu with the next races to go, the featured events and all sports to bet on which you can use to find the TAb NZ betting market you are after.
You TAB NZ betslip is on the right-hand side of the screen and this is where you can see the potential, pending and finished bets that you have placed.
The TAB Online NZ website is pretty easy to use but it could be better
TAB Online NZ
The TAB's online NZ website has some benefits and some downsides.
One thing that I wish they had was a live chat function. Many other bookies offer this tool and it's great for getting instant answers to your questions. However, on the NZ TAB online website, you will find an instructive FAQ section and a few helpful how-to videos.
Overall, the layout is a little messy with many markets being displayed at once. This is not helped by the fact that there is no search function to quickly locate the bets you want to place. However, if you use the menu on the left-hand side of the NZ TAB online screen you'll be able to find most markets relatively quickly.
It's definitely nice that the TAB New Zealand owns Trackside which means that when you are logged in you can watch live racing but it's a shame that there are not many live streaming options for others sports like you get with other NZ bookmakers like Bet365, Betway and 888sport.
