Read a more detailed overview of how to bet on horses.

💯 What are the best horse racing bets?

That depends. If you think a horse has a good chance to win then a win bet might be best. If you think a horse will do well, but might not win, then a place bet is probably better. Perhaps you have a good idea which two horses will be the strongest? Then a maybe a Quinella is the best bet.

Here are some of the most horse racing common bet types:

  • Win - Bet on a horse to come 1st
  • Place - Bet on a horse to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd
  • Each Way - Bet on a horse to either win or to place
  • Quinella - Bet on the two horses that will come 1st and 2nd (in any order)
  • Exacta - Bet on the horse that will come 1st and the horse that will come 2nd (in order)
  • Trifecta - Bet on the horses that will come 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (in order)
  • First 4 - Bet on the horses that will come 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th (in order)

Remember, the more specific your bet is, the less likely it will it be to happen. However, the odds for unlikely bets are also higher and therefore you stand to make more.

🔍 Where can I find the best horse racing odds?

Generally, you will find the best horse racing odds at Betway, Bet365 and 888sport.

These three bookmakers also have best odds guarantees for all UK and Irish horse races so you can be sure that you will always receive the best odds for your bets.

Because horse racing is such a huge international industry, you will likely find different racing odds on different sites. Tote odds also vary between bookmakers so be sure to look at a few of the different racing betting sites on this page and shop around for the best racing odds.

💰 Can you make money horse betting?

Of course! Betting on horses can be very lucrative and some people even bet on racing professionally.

Of course, like with any betting, there is still risk involved. To maximise your chances of making money do your research, shop around to find the best odds, utilize sign-up bonuses and never bet more than you are prepared to lose.

🏇 How do I choose which horse to bet on?

If you are betting on horses online then you'll want to keep these things in mind when choosing a horse to back:

  • Form - How has the horse been racing recently?
  • Jockey - How has the jockey been racing recently?
  • Distance - Is the horse suited to the distance of this race?
  • Surface - What is the race track like and does it suit this horse?

Of course, some punters base their bets on other factors like how the horse looks before the race in the paddock or even what colour or number the horse is wearing.

🖥 Where is there horse racing live streaming?

There sure is! Bet365 NZ is our favourite bookmaker for horse racing live streaming because they stream the most New Zealand and international races. Generally, to access racing live streaming you will need to have some money on the race that is being run.

🏆 Where is the best place to bet on the Melbourne Cup?

The Melbourne Cup has been dubbed "the race that stops the nation" in Australia but it is also one of the biggest horse races in the rest of the world. As such, any of the racing betting sites on this page offer will offer competitive and extensive Melbourne Cup racing odds.

Our recommendations don't change for the Melbourne cup and any of the top racing sites on this page will be great for your Melbourne Cup bets.

🔒 Is online horse betting legal in NZ?

Yes! Betting on horses is legal for punters betting online or at physical TAB stores in New Zealand. New Zealand's racing and sports betting laws allow Kiwis to bet with bookmakers across the world because these companies don't originate from within New Zealand.

New Zealand Racing Betting

Kiwis bet on the races in a variety of ways, from trackside TAB booths to mobile race betting apps to online racing bookmakers like those reviewed on this page.

The NZ Racing industry contributes nearly $2 billion to the New Zealand economy every year.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned punter, we have created this page to help you find new sports betting sites for your horse bets. The betting sites that we have listed on this page offer great odds for NZ races today, but they really thrive for international racing markets.

How to: Betting on Horses

Horse Racing betting dates back to the early 1600's in the UK, long before the first Pakeha came to New Zealand, and as such, it has a rich history in both New Zealand and the rest of the Commonwealth.

Before betting went online in the late 1990s all horse racing betting was done at the race track or in physical betting outlets. However, as with sports betting, much of NZ's racing betting is now done online, or on betting apps, with the TAB and other international betting sites.

How to Bet on Horses

Despite the racing slang, which can be confusing for new punters, betting on horse racing is actually pretty easy, especially with any of the top online bookmakers that we list on this site.

To bet on horses online:

  1. Choose a good betting site: We recommend sticking with the betting sites listed on this page. They all offer competitive horse racing odds to New Zealand players and you can bet with New Zealand dollars.
  2. Sign-up and claim your bonus: Simply follow any of the links on this page to a racing betting site, sign-up, and then make an initial deposit or place your first bet (depending on the T's & C's) to claim your horse racing bonus.
  3. Find a race: On any given day of the week, there are countless races that are available to bet on. New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada and the UK have some of the biggest horse racing markets. Don't worry about sticking with New Zealand races as you'll be able to find statistics and race form information for all international races online too.
  4. Pick or horse (or a few): Horse racing bets vary (see below) and you can bet on one, or multiple horses, in any given race. Betting sites provide information about the jockey, the track, the horse and its previous race form so you can make informed bets.
  5. Choose your bet: Decide whether you think the horse will win, or place. Maybe you even think you know which horses will be the top 3. In any case, pick the bet type that you think makes the most sense.
  6. Place your bet: After selecting your horse(s) and what kind of bet you want to place, simply hit 'place bet' or 'bet now' and you're good to go!

Types of Horse Racing Bets

The unique language of horse racing betting can be off-putting to people who are just starting to bet on the races so we have listed some of the most common horse racing bets below.

Horse Racing Bet Types

You can also choose to box your Exactas, Trifectas, or First 4s. When you box your bet, you cover every combination which means that the horses you select can finish in order.

For example, a $2 trifecta on horse A to come 1st, horse B to come 2nd and horse C to come 3rd costs just $2 but the horses have to finish in this order.

However, a $2 boxed trifecta on horse A, horse B and horse C to all come in the top 3 covers every combination (6 combinations) and therefore costs $12. This means, for example, that if horse B comes 1st, horse C comes 2nd and horse A comes 3rd you still win.

There are other bet types available for horse racing but these are some of the most popular ones. For instance, you can also add additional horses to your quinellas or trifectas for a decreased payout.

NZ Racing Tips

There are a number of things you'll want to consider before placing a racing bet.

Many punters want to secure the best odds, while others consider statistics the most important factor when deciding where to bet. And some people just like to bet on horses with funny names.

Whatever type of bettor you are, we have listed some of the things you'll definitely want to keep in mind before you bet on a horse, as well as some important distinctions about different racing odds.

Nz racing tips

Questions to keep in mind when betting on horses:

1️⃣ How is the horse's previous form?

A horse's form will be displayed for the last 6 races. For example, it may look like this:

682F54

Here, the numbers represent where the horse finished, for example, this horse finished in 4th place in it's most recent race. The F means that the horse 'Fell' in its 4th race.

Horse Racing From Explained

Common abbreviations used for horse racing form:

1-9The position the horse finished in a race
0Finished outside the top 9
PPulled up (reined in as horse may be too tired/injured, or horse may just stop running)
FFell
SSlipped Up
RRefusal
BBrought down
UUnseated rider
-Separates years, i.e. left of this is from previous year, e.g. Dec 06 - Jan 07
/Separates racing seasons, i.e. left of this is from the season before last
BDIndicates the horse was brought down by another runner
BFStands for the beaten favourite and indicates a horse was favourite for a race but did not win
CDIndicates a horse has won over course and distance

Form is arranged chronologically from left (oldest) to right (newest).

2️⃣ What is the jockey like?

You'll want to consider how successful the Jockey has been in past races. Has it ever ridden with this horse before or does it have experience at this race track? Even the Jockey's weight can be important since the horse has to carry the jockey around the track.

3️⃣ How has the horse been running?

Like humans, horses have different running styles that suit different tracks. Daintier horses are generally better on firm surfaces where there is more resistance whereas horses that hit the ground hard are often more suited to softer tracks that are more forgiving.

4️⃣ What distance is the horse running?

Horses also have different strengths based on different distances. For example, a horse may be more of a sprinter, so better suited to short distances, or maybe they take time to get up to speed so they are better in longer races.

5️⃣ Are the odds fixed or tote?

Horse racing odds can either be fixed or tote odds. Fixed odds cannot change so the odds you see when you place your bet are the odds you will receive if your bet wins. Tote odds, on the other hand, can change based on the bets of other punters for the same race. See the more detailed explanation below to decide which type of horse racing odds is right for you.

NZ Racing Odds

Fixed Odds vs. Tote Odds

Most racing bookmakers offer both fixed and tote odds for horse races so it's up to you to decide which type of odds is right for you.

As the name suggests, fixed odds do not change. Therefore the odds you see when you place your bet are the odds you will receive if your bet wins.

Tote odds fluctuate until the last moment before the race. This is because the tote odds for any given horse in a race are impacted by the bets of other punters.

The odds you receive with a tote bet are the odds that the horse you bet on has when the race markets close.

If somebody, or many people, decide to back a certain horse, its odds will decrease so the bookmaker doesn't lose too much if this horse wins. Conversely, if nobody backs a certain horse, it's tote odds will increase in the moments leading up to the start of a race.

Example: Tote Odds vs. Fixed Odds
Fixed OddsTote Odds - 2 hrs Before RaceTote Odds - 10 mins Before Race
Phar Lap3.503.104.00
Veandercross5.005.507.50
Melody Belle2.802.702.30

This example shows how the tote odds could change before a fictional race.

Phar Lap

Phar Lap's fixed-odds show that the bookmaker thinks he is the second favourite to win the race when the race markets open. 2 hours before the race, more punters have been putting money on Phar Lap so his tote odds are lower than his fixed odds. 10 minutes before the race, more punters are backing Melody Belle so Phar Lap's tote odds increase above his fixed odds.

  • A tote bet on Phar Lap would be most profitable because his odds are the highest 10 minutes before the race.

Veandercross

Veandercross is the least favoured to win by the bookmaker. Punters agree and with fewer bets on him to win his tote odds increase right up until 10 minutes before the race.

  • A tote bet on Veandercross would be most profitable because his tote odds end up higher than his fixed odds.

Melody Belle

Melody Belle starts the race as the bookies' favourite. Her odds decrease slightly two hours before the race and then more significantly 10 minutes before the race as more money is put on her to win.

  • A fixed odds bet would be most profitable for Melody Belle as her fixed-odds finish higher than her tote odds.

What does this mean for the average Kiwi punter?

This example shows us that the fixed odds reflect which horses the bookmaker favours while the tote odds reflect which horses punters favour.

Betting on fixed-odds is therefore generally more profitable when you bet on favourites, especially if the bookmaker undervalues them with their fixed odds (like Melody Bell).

Betting on fixed odds is also generally better to do when the race markets open and you can find early value.

However, you may also want to wait to bet on fixed-odds until you see how the tote odds change.

For instance, you may be unsure about backing Melody Belle but when you see her tote odds fall you know that other punters think she is the outright favourite.

Tote betting is generally best to do just before a race starts. This way you can find value in horses that other punters have not been backing. This is because you risk getting lower odds than you might have otherwise bargained for if you bet on the tote odds too early.

Of course, these guidelines are not true for all races.

Sometimes, the favourite in the fixed odds may not be the favourite for punters betting on tote odds, in which case betting on the pre-race favourite with tote odds would be more profitable as their tote odds would be higher than their fixed odds.

Best Odds Guarantee

Bet365, Betway and 888sport all offer New Zealand punters a Best Odds Guarantee for UK and Irish horse races.

This means that Kiwis don't have to worry about searching for the best value in their offshore racing bets as these betting sites will always give you the best odds, whether that's the starting odds, or the tote odds when you place your bet.

Be aware that there can be restrictions placed on best odds guarantees like that it only applies to bets placed after 9 am on race day. To be sure you are receiving the best racing odds, check the T&C's.

These three bookmakers also all offer live-streaming which makes betting on UK and Irish horse racing both easy, and profitable.

888sport nz horse racing

888sport offers New Zealander punters a best price guarantee when they bet on UK and Irish races

Ante-Post Racing Odds

Ante-post horse racing odds refer to odds for future races that are given at least a day in advance. This is commonly offered for big horse racing events like Cheltenham Gold Cup, Melbourne Cup and Grand National, but many of the top offshore bookies also offer ante-post racing odds for smaller meets.

Betting on Ante-Post odds is popular for experienced bettors who think they can find additional value on early bets for horses that might have lower odds on race day.

🏇 What does SP mean?

SP stands for Starting Price.

If you take the fixed odds price for a horse you will get the SP odds. Alternatively, if the bookmaker you chooses has a best odds guarantee then you will get the SP odds if your tote odds fall below the SP.

Online Horse Betting Bonuses

Betway, Bet365 and 888sport all offer great horse racing bonuses for existing customers.

Some of the most common NZ racing bonuses are listed below but you'll find all of the current horse racing offers on the bookmaker you choose under the 'Promotions' tab.

❌ Non-runner No Bet

If you back a horse and then they get scratched (don't end up running), then you will receive your bet stake back.

🚀 Racing Boosts

You can receive boosted odds on certain races or certain horses. This is especially true for horses that aren't favourites and that the bookie wants you to bet on because they are trying to get punters to bet on horses that fewer people have backed

💰 Racing Free Bets

Betway's free bet club or 888sport's free bet promotions are great places to secure free bets for horse races. Often you will have to make one, or more, bets of your own before you receive a free bet but if you were planning on having a flutter anyway then this is a great way to earn some extra winnings.

📈 Racing Accumulator Boosts

When you bet on multiple races in a single bet many of the top horse racing betting sites will give you boosted odds. Of course, it is hard to pick multiple winning horse racing bets but if you do, you can receive great payouts with Acca boosts.

NZ Racing

NZ Thoroughbred Racing

Sometimes referred to as gallops or gallopers, NZ thoroughbred racing is New Zealand's most lucrative and popular form of racing.

Thoroughbreds are a breed of horses that all originate from three stallions that were imported into Englund in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thoroughbreds are bred to race and are known for their agility, spirit and speed.

Thoroughbred horses are raced by a jockey who rides on the back of the horse.

NZ thoroughbred racing occurs throughout New Zealand at big racecourses like Riccarton Park, Awapuni, Ellerslie Racecourse, Trentham Racecourse and Hastings Racecourse but also at a number of smaller tracks like Tauherenikau Racecourse, Ascot Park and Avondale.

New Zealand's richest thoroughbred race is the Karaka Million where the stake is $1 million. Some of NZ's other big thoroughbred races are the New Zealand Cup, Auckland Cup, Wellington Cup, Railway Stakes, New Zealand Derby and New Zealand Oaks.

Punters can bet on all NZ thoroughbred races at the TAB or with any of the horse racing betting sites we recommend.

NZ Harness Racing

Harness racing in New Zealand has two different forms based on the way the horse runs.

  • Pacing: the two legs on the same side of the horse move forward at the same time
  • Trotting: the two diagonally opposite legs of the horse move forward at the same time

Pacing is more popular than trotting in New Zealand and as such NZ pacing races are more lucrative. Pacing is also generally faster than trotting.

NZ harness racing horses are Standardbred horses that originate from the USA.

In trotting and pacing, the driver sites in a two-wheeled cart.

Some of New Zealand's biggest harness races are the New Zealand Trotting Cup, Auckland Trotting Cup, Noel J Taylor Memorial Mile, New Zealand Derby, Dominion Handicap and Rowe Cup.
