Frequently Asked Questions - NRL Betting NZ
Helping to answer all of your queries about NRL betting, how it works, where to find the best NRL odds and more.
Of course! Like any other professional sport, rugby league matches attract thousands of punters from New Zealand and around the world every year.
The NRL is the biggest rugby league competition in the world with the most viewers and the best players. The NRL is also the most popular rugby league competition for sports betting although other rugby league competitions that can be bet on include the Super League (UK), Elite One Championship (France) and even the CZRLA First Division (Czech Republic).
New Zealand's international rugby league team, the Kiwis, also play in various international competitions and test matches every year and these can be wagered on.
NRL betting works like most other sports betting. Here's how to bet on NRL:
- Find a sports betting site that offers NRL odds (all of the ones on this page do)
- Sign-up and deposit funds to your account
- Select an NRL market to bet on - common NRL bets include:
- Picking the match result
- Picking the winner with a handicap
- Picking the margin of a win
- Picking a special event to occur
- Place your bet.
There is! New Zealanders can Live bet on NRL games with any of the bookmakers on this page.
Live betting odds are constantly changing based on what is happening in the match so you can often find better odds on matches that are in-play than you can on matches that haven't started yet. Most live betting sites also let you cash out early which means that if your bet is currently winning you can get your winnings before the match even ends.
Line betting sometimes has different names like 'points start'. Basically, with line betting teams' odds are evened out by applying a handicap before the match begins.
New Zealand Warriors [+17.5] 1.90 | Penrith Panthers [-17.5] 1.90
In the example above, a handicap of 17.5 points is applied to make the odds of the NZ Warriors vs Penrith Panthers match equal. The Panthers are favourites so a -17.5 handicap is applied to them while the Warriors are underdogs so a +17.5 handicap is applied to them.
This means that the Warriors effectively start off with 17.5 extra points.
Therefore, a bet on the warriors to win at odds of 1.90 would require them to lose by 17 points or less, whereas a bet on the Panthers to win at odds of 1.90 would require them to win by 18 points or more.
NRL tips and NRL predictions are available in a number of places across the internet. The best betting sites, like Betway, have Rugby League blogs where you can read NRL previews and find NRL tips from league experts.
There are also a number of sports blogs and sports Twitter accounts that have weekly NRL picks and predictions.
International bookmakers, like the ones on this page, are constantly competing for the best NRL odds. This means that the best odds for a specific NRL match, or NRL bet, may change by the day (or even minute).
However, all of the sites that we review have great NRL odds. In fact, they are often better than the TAB NZ's NRL odds.
We particularly recommend Bet365 for your NRL bets as we constantly find that they have the best NRL odds of any betting site.
Head to head betting has a few different names like 'two-way' betting or 'match result' betting.
Head to head betting refers to a bet that predicts the winner of a match with two outcomes (i.e. no draw).
Head to head NRL betting is probably the most common type of NRL bet you can make.

How Does NRL Betting Work?
New to NRL betting or just want a refresher on how to bet on NRL? Great! We've listed the 5 things you should do when making an NRL bet.
1️⃣ Pick 2-3 great NRL betting sites
You should start off by selecting a few NRL betting sites that offer you what you want. You'll want to pick a couple of good sports betting sites because you'll want to compare their odds later on. It should be obvious but you'll also want to make sure these betting sites offer NRL odds. Luckily for you, we have ranked our favourite sports betting sites for NRL bets below. If you're looking for a great NZ betting app for the NRL then click here.

2️⃣ Read some NRL tips
Once you have a couple of great NRL betting sites to choose from you'll want to inform yourself of what the experts are saying about upcoming NRL games. Some of our favourite bookmakers like Betway and 888sport have really comprehensive blogs which include previews and predictions for NRL matches.
The internet is a big, wonderful resource too and you'll often find free NRL tips there. The goal of finding NRL tips is just to get a better understanding of how a team, or key players, are playing what you should expect from their next match.
3️⃣ Decide on an NRL betting market
There are heaps of NRL bets available online. Each has you betting on something slightly different and depending on your own knowledge and preferences, different types of bets will suit you.
Some of the most common NRL betting markets are:
- Head to Head/Match Result - You pick the winner, or if the match will be a draw
- Handicap Bet - One team starts with a handicap and you pick the winner, or that it will be a draw, based on this handicap
- Margin Bet - You pick which team will win and what their winning margin will be (usually 1-12 or 13+)
- Player Specials - You pick a specific player to score, get a card etc.
- Half Time - You pick the half time score, the half-time margin etc.
- Specials/Match Events - You pick a match event to happen like which team will score the first try, the last try, how many conversions they will get etc.
- Line betting - The head to head odds are evened out with a handicap being applied and you pick the winner of the match based on this handicap (explained below)
NRL Line Betting Explained
Let's say you place a $50 line bet on the Warriors to win.
The odds are 1.90 and the Warriors have a +17.5 handicap.
The match ends 12-29 in favour of Panthers. However, with the +17.5 handicap applied, the score for your bet is 29.5-29 in favour of the Warriors.
Therefore you win this line bet and your bet returns $95.05 for a profit of $45.05.

4️⃣ Compare NRL Odds
Now that you know what type of NRL bet you want to make, and where you might want to make it, you're ready to compare NRL odds. To compare odds, find the match you want to bet on by heading to the Rugby League or NRL tab on your favourite betting sites. We recommend opening a few different tabs. Now find the market you're interested in and compare the odds offered for that market. You'll want to pick the betting site with the highest odds as this will you give you the biggest payout for your bet if it wins.
Example: Finding the Best Rugby League Odds
Let's imagine that you want to place a bet on a match between the New Zealand Warriors and the Melbourne Storm.
You've decided that either Bookie A or Bookie B is the bookmaker that you will choose because they both have $100 sign-up bonuses and they also have live-streaming capabilities.
After reading some NRL tips online you discover that the Storm are the favourites by a long shot but you also read that the Warriors tend to score more points in the second half and that the Storm tends to concede a lot of tries in the second half.
You decide that you want to place a bet on the Highest Scoring Half.
The odds for these bets are as follows:
- Bookie A - 1st Half - 2.10, 2nd Half - 1.75
- Bookie B - 1st Half - 2.00, 2nd Half - 2.00
It seems like Bookie B has failed to take into account the fact that the Warriors score most of their points in the second half and that the Storm concedes most of theirs in the second half. Because you have done your research you have found good value with a bet with Bookie B on the Highest Scoring Half to be the 2nd half at odds of 2.00.
You decide to put $20 on the 2nd half of this match to be the highest-scoring half with Bookie B.
The first half score is 4-10 to the Storm but the match finishes 16-22. There were 14 points scored in the first half and 24 scored in the second.
Your research has paid off and your $20 bet returns $40 for $20 profit!
5️⃣ Place your bet!

NRL Grand Final Betting
Betting on the NRL Grand Final
The NRL Grand Final is a yearly event where the two finalists from that year's competition compete for the Provan-Summons Trophy. The NRL grand final is one of the largest attended club championships in the world and betting on the NRL Grand Final is unsurprisingly extremely popular.
To bet on the NRL Grand Final punters can place a bet as they would for any other NRL game. However, because it is such a big event there are usually more NRL odds available for the game and even obscure bookies that we don't recommend using offer NRL Grand Final odds.
You can also bet on the NRL Premiership at any point during the season with a futures bet.
The 1999 NRL Grand Final at Stadium Australia in Sydney had a world record crowd of 107,999
NRL Betting Tips
- Research the upcoming match: Make sure you know what the experts are predicting. Important things to keep in mind are: Who are the key players for each team? Where is the match being played? What is the current form of the teams playing?
- Find a good betting site: All the betting sites that we review are great but they are not all created equal. Determine what is important for you, whether that is website functionality, a good mobile app, great odds or live streaming options and then pick the suit that suits you best.
- Don't forget about the bonus: Some betting sites offer bonuses to existing customers while others only have sign-up bonuses for new customers. If you want to secure a bonus decide whether a free bet or a deposit bonus is right for you and think about how much you have to deposit and how much the betting site will give you in bet credits.
- Read the T's and C's:Make sure you know what the wagering requirements, eligible markets, minimum odds and accepted deposit methods are for your bonus before you get started. Different bonus offers also have different expiry dates so be sure to place your bets before your bonuses expire.
- Place good bets: Choose bets that you think have good value. If you're using a bonus then that doesn't mean you should be careless and waste it on a silly bet.
- Always gamble responsibly: Set limits and know how much you are prepared to lose. There is always a risk involved with betting, no matter how sure you are. Remember, betting is supposed to be fun so keep it that way!
