Frequently Asked Questions - NZ Football Betting Sites
You have questions about football betting in New Zealand and we have the answers!
Football betting, or soccer betting as some of us like to call it, is pretty simple. Online bookmakers offer odds for different types of football bets and punters (that's you) can wager real-money on these bets.
Common types of football bets include Head to Head, Double Chance, Draw No Bet, Correct Score and Goalscorers. These are all explained in detail below.
Football betting works much like any other type of sports bet. To bet online with a football betting site you will want to:
- Choose a football site from our list
- Register and deposit money
- Claim your sign-up bonus
- Find football betting odds
- Place your bet
For all the nitty-gritty details on how to bet on football, check out the rest of this page.
New Zealand football betting sites usually display their odds in the decimal format. To calculate your returns with decimal odds, simply multiply your bet stake with the odds offered. To calculate your profit, all you need to do is subtract the total winnings from your original stake.
For example: A $10 bet on the Wellington Phoenix to win the A-league Grand Final at odds of 5.50 would return $55.00. This is a profit of $45.00 ($55.00 - $10.00).
Betting sites will automatically show you how much your winnings will be for any bet that you select.
For the best football odds in New Zealand visit Betway NZ.
Yes! All of the football betting sites that we list on this page offer real-money wagering. This means that if you are successful, you can make real money by betting. However, betting sites exist because many people don't make money in the long run.
Therefore a better question to ask might be: Is football betting profitable?
The answer to that is that is: it depends.
We have some football betting tips on this page that can help you to make money from betting on football but at the end of the day, it's always important to make well-informed bets and to be prepared to lose any money that you wager.
Good question. Individual preferences vary and for some people, football odds are the most important thing in a football bookie whereas for others live-streaming capabilities or sign-up bonuses might be their top priority.
Our favourite football betting sites combine all of these things and that's why we recommend Betway, Bet365 and 888sport for football betting in New Zealand.
Our favourite football betting app is LeoVegas's sports betting app.
LeoVegas was founded with a mobile-first approach and as such their app functions really smoothly on both Android and Apple devices. LeoVegas offers heaps of football betting markets for all the top international football leagues, and many of the more obscure ones too.
With some great ongoing bonuses and a nice $50 free bet sign-up offer the LeoVags app is definitely worth the download.
Football line betting almost always refers to American football line betting. That is because soccer matches have much lower scores and so it would be hard for bookies to determine even football lines. Line betting is also common for Basketball, NRL and Super Rugby Betting.
When line betting on football the bookmaker will even the teams' odds of winning by applying a handicap to the score of the match.
San Francisco 49ers [+7.5] 1.90 | Kansas City Chiefs [-7.5] 1.90
In the example above, a handicap of 7.5 points is applied by the bookie to make the odds of the match between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs equal.
The Chiefs are the favourites so a -7.5 handicap is applied to them while the 49ers are underdogs so a +7.5 handicap is applied to them.
This means that the 49ers effectively start off with 7.5 extra points.
Therefore, a bet on the 49ers to win at odds of 1.90 would require them to lose by 7 points or less, whereas a bet on the Chiefs to win at odds of 1.90 would require them to win by 8 points or more.
Let's say you place a $20 line bet on the 49ers to win.
The odds are 1.90 and the 49ers have a +7.5 handicap.
The match ends 12-19 in favour of Chiefs. However, with the +7.5 handicap applied, the score for your bet is 19.5-19 in favour of the 49ers.
Therefore you win this line bet and your bet returns $38.02 for a profit of $18.02.
Football betting is legal and safe with any of the online betting sites that we review.
These bookmakers have millions of global customers and gambling licences in places like the UK, Malta and Gibraltar.
Online betting in New Zealand is legal because New Zealand's Gambling Act does not restrict offshore betting sites from offering sports odds and New Zealand dollars to New Zealand players.

How to Bet on Football
Online football betting works like any other in-person or online bet. There a few simple steps to bet on football which are outlined below.
How do you bet on football?
- Sign-up with a great football betting site
- Make a deposit and claim your bonus
- Find a football betting market
- Select football odds with good value
- Place your bet!
Many Kiwi punters like to pick the winner of a given soccer match but there are hundreds of football bets you can choose from. However, if you're looking to be more adventurous, or you're unsure what kind of bet you want to place, we've outlined some of the most common football bets below.
Types of Football Bets
🏅 Head to Head/Match Result
This bet has a few different names - like full-time result - but it is the most common football bet type. You bet on which team will win the match, or whether it will be a draw.
🔒 Double chance
If you aren't confident with your Head to Head bet you can cover an additional full-time result with a double chance bet. This means that you can choose one team to win or draw, or even either team to win - in which case you would lose if the match ended as a draw.
❌ Draw no bet
With this bet, you choose one of the teams to win, and if the result is a draw, your stake is refunded. There is less risk with a draw no bet but your potential winnings are also a little lower.
✅ Correct score
You choose the exact end-score of the football match. This is a popular type of football bet because games tend to be lower scoring than for other sports like Rugby and Basketball.
📈 Line Bet
Line betting is not common for soccer betting because of the low scoring nature so if you have heard the term 'football line betting' it was probably referring to American football (NFL). A line bet is when a handicap is applied to the score so that the odds are evened out. You then choose which team you think will win with the handicap applied.
What is football line betting?
Football line betting almost always refers to American football line betting. That is because soccer matches have much lower scores and so it would be hard for bookies to determine even football lines. Line betting is also common for Basketball, Super Rugby and NRL betting.
🎯 Goalscorers
Punters can also choose which player they think might score in a given football match. Strikers, wingers and players who score often have lower odds for scoring while defenders (and even goalkeepers) have much higher odds. You can also pick who you might score the first or last goal, or a player to score multiple goals.
🚩 Team offsides (over/under)
The bookmaker will set a line, eg. 5.5, and you can bet whether or not a team will have more, or less, offsides than this number. You might know that a team likes to 'park the bus', in which case there will likely be fewer offsides for the opposing team. Alternatively, if they play a high line, there might be more offsides for the opposing team.
⚽ Player tackles (over/under)
Some bookies will let you bet on how many tackles a certain player will have in a match. This option is usually only available for defenders and defensive midfielders. Again, the betting site will set a line and you will bet on whether they have more, or less, tackles than this number.
⏱ First set piece
Betting can require a lot of skill, and knowledge, but betting on a set piece is more of a gamble. When betting on the first set-piece you decide what dead ball situation you think will be the first of the match eg. a corner, throw-in, free kick, goal kick or penalty.
There are plenty more football betting markets than those displayed above and to see all the options you have its best to head to the website of a sports betting site.
Football Betting Tips
Do you want to bet on the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA World Cup or maybe even the A-League but you aren't sure where to start? We've outlined 5 tips for football betting that will help you find great odds and winning bets.
1️⃣ Pick 2-3 great football betting sites
You're going to want to start off by choosing a couple of different football betting sites that suit your preferences. Maybe you want a great live betting site or perhaps you are looking for the best football odds. Either way, start off with a few sites so you can compare them later on.
2️⃣ Read some football predictions
You'll find a myriad of football predictions and tipsters online. The English Premier League, Champions League, La Liga and Bundesliga are just a few of the top European leagues that are hugely popular around the world.
To find the best football tips we recommend bookmakers like Betway and 888sport who have really comprehensive football blogs.
Otherwise, Twitter, or a quick Google search, are other great options.
3️⃣ Decide on a football betting market
There are plenty of football bets to choose from and we have already outline some of the most common football bets above in our How To Bet On Football section. You're going to want to decide which bet has value based on what you have read about the match you want to bet on.
For example, a Goalscorer bet on Ulises Davila from the Wellington Phoenix might have great value if you know that he has scored in his last two matches and that the Phoenix are playing bottom of the table Central Coast Mariners.
4️⃣ Compare football Odds
This is perhaps the most important football betting tip we have.
You might have a favourite bookie that you have used for years but football is such a huge sport so the odds for any given match can vary considerably between online bookmakers. Use the football betting site list we have provided to go to different betting sites and compare the odds they offer for the football betting market you want.
A difference in odds can be the difference between hundreds of dollars
For example, a $200 bet on Liverpool to win the Premier League might have odds of 3.30 at Bookie A and 4.00 at Bookie B before the season starts. This bet would return a profit of $460 at Bookie A but a $600 profit at Bookie B. Therefore, comparing football odds was the difference in $140 in this case.
5️⃣ Place your bet!
Placing your bet is easy. As long as you are signed up to a betting site and have funds in your account you can just click on the bet you want, enter the amount you want to wager, and then click 'Place Bet' or 'Bet Now'. Easy as!
❗Don't forget!
Most of the football betting sites that we have outlined in this guide have great sign-up bonuses that either match your first deposit or give you free bets that can be used on soccer matches.
Finding the Best Football Odds
Odds are generally on the top of every punter's mind when they're choosing a football betting site. That's because the odds you get for your bets directly impact your winnings.
It's important to compare odds between NZ bookmakers before settling and placing your bet. You can see all the NZ football betting sites with great odds at the top of this page.
Here are some tips for getting great football odds:
- Compare different bookmakers - Different betting sites have different odds so shop around and find the best value.
- Look out for odds boosts and specials - Some bookies offer odds boosts and special bets with increased odds. The odds for these bets will almost always be better than the odds offered elsewhere.
- Multiply odds with Multi bets - Multi bets allow you to combine different bets for multiplied odds and increased winnings. Eg. a $10 Multi bet on Barcelona to win the Champions League Final (2.10) and a bet on Lionel Messi to score (2.40) will return $50.40 (the multiplied odds are 5.04).
- Consider live betting - Live betting odds are always changing so you might want to wait until a game has started to place your bet. If you want to bet on Bayern Munich to beat Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga the odds will be slightly higher 10 minutes into the game than they were at the start of the match (provided Bayern doesn't score early). Live betting also has the option of cashing out early and securing your winnings before the final whistle.
Example: Getting the best Premier League Odds
You want to bet on Manchester United to beat Manchester City in the Premier League.
Normally you use the TAB where the odds for this bet are 2.20. However, after finding My Betting Sites NZ you discover that on Betway the pre-match odds are 2.40.
You also discover that with Betway Boost you can get enhanced odds for this match, increasing the odds of this bet to 2.60.
You decide to increase your odds even more by placing a Multi. You want to bet that Manchester United will score first. The odds for this bet are 2.10.
You take it one step further and decide to bet-live and wait until the match has been played for ten minutes to place your bet. Neither team has scored yet but the odds for Manchester United to win, with your boost, have increased to 2.70 while the odds for Manchester United to score in the first half have increased to 2.50.
You place a $10 multi on Manchester United to win (2.70) and Manchester United to score in the first half (2.50).
Man U do score in the first half and secure a 2-0 win by the final whistle.
All up your $10 live Multi bet returns $67.50.
Your original bet on Man United to beat City with the TAB would have returned just $22.00.
Sure, your new bet was a little riskier but you were also able to find great odds by using some of the features Betway has to offer.
The Best NZ Football Odds

Live Football Betting
There are plenty of benefits to live betting. Aside from the fact that it adds an exciting element to any football match that you are watching, live betting allows you to make informed bets based on how the football match you are betting on is going.
Live betting has changed the way people bet today and as such, it is offered by all the top NZ betting sites.
Here are some of the main features and benefits of live betting.
- Changing odds → Bookies are constantly altering their live football odds based on how a match is progressing. This means that you can often get higher odds for live bets than you can for pre-match bets. Alternatively, if a team gets an early goal you might get lower odds for a live football bet but also more security.
- Cash-out options → Most betting sites will let you cash out winning football bets early for a decreased payout. This means that you can claim your winnings before the final whistle and enjoy the match without any stress.
- Live betting on mobile → The top NZ bookies also have live betting functions on their mobile apps. Live football betting on mobile works the same as live football betting on desktop but you can do it from anywhere that you get an internet connection.
- Live streaming → Bet365 and other top bookmakers like Betway and 888sport also let you live stream football matches. This is perfect for making informed bets or for just enjoying a football game.

Popular Leagues & Tournaments for Football Betting
Football is the world's biggest sport and as such there are leagues and competitions in almost every country you can think of. This also means that international betting sites want to cater to all of these international fans with football odds for all international football leagues, big or small.
These are the most popular football betting leagues and competitions for New Zealanders:
🏴 English Premier League Betting
The Premier League, or just the EPL, is the arguably the world's most popular football league. 20 teams compete in a 38-game season with the top team at the end of the season being crowned the champions. Football betting is especially popular with teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.
🇪🇺 Champions League Betting
The top European football teams compete in the UEFA Champions League every year. Seeing the world's top footballers compete for the Champions League trophy makes for exciting games and unsurprisingly, exciting football betting opportunities. The tournament starts with 32 teams until the two finalists meet in a neutral European city for the final showdown.
🇦🇺 A-League Betting
The A-League is Australia and New Zealand's biggest professional football league. The A-League season runs from October to May and includes a 29-round regular season followed by a Finals Series playoff with the top 6 teams. There are 11 A-League teams but New Zealand only has one side represented - the Wellington Phoenix - who are yet to lift the A-League trophy. Despite this, A-League betting is still popular in New Zealand as it is our only full-time professional football league.
🌏 World Cup Betting
The FIFA World Cup occurs once every four years for both Men and Women. 32 international football teams from 6 different football confederations are represented. World Cup betting is extremely popular in New Zealand, and around the world, and the FIFA World Cup final is the most-watched television event in the whole world. New Zealand's last World Cup appearance was in 2014 in South Africa where our All Whites were the only unbeaten team (3 draws).
