Which Sportsbooks Offer Injury Protection on Player Props?
Early injuries are the cruelest way to lose a bet. One awkward landing, one bad cut, and your ticket goes up in smoke before it even had a chance.
The good news? A handful of U.S. sportsbooks have started protecting bettors from these bad beats by adding injury insurance policies on player prop bets.
While Fanatics Sportsbook was the first to introduce their Fair Play policy back in 2024, DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365 and ESPNbet have recently added similar policies.
In this guide, we’ll break down exactly how each program works, what sports they cover, and which one will protect you best - based on your betting style.
Example of Injury Protection in Action
Imagine you bet on Malik Nabers to record Over 4.5 receptions at odds of +110 in the Giants vs. Chargers game.
In the 2nd quarter, Nabers goes down with an injury and is officially ruled out for the rest of the game. At that point, he’s caught only 2 passes - well short of your line. Normally, this would be a losing bet.
But because you placed it with a sportsbook that offers injury protection, your wager is covered. Instead of a loss, your bet is voided and you are refunded your bet amount back into your account.

Sportsbooks with Injury Protection - Ranked
While all 5 sportsbooks on this list will offer your player props protection from early game injuries, they are definitely not built the same.
Some offer coverage across multiple sports, others have longer windows where this rule applies, and some will refund you in bonus bets rather than cash.
Having reviewed the terms and conditions of each program, our experts have ranked the betting sites that offer injury protection below.

Fanatics Sportsbook Injury Protection
Rolled out in 2024, Fanatics’ Fair Play set the standard for injury protection - and no one’s topped it since.
Not only were they the pioneers in this area, Fair Play remains the most wide-reaching policy in the game. It doesn’t stop at football - you’ll find coverage across just about every major U.S. sport, plus tennis and golf. And when it triggers, your bet is voided and the refund comes back as cash, not Bonus Bets. That’s still the gold standard.
Fair Play covers both straight bets and parlay legs, with generous protection windows built into each sport. Other books may have tried to copy the formula, but Fanatics still does it bigger and better.
Pros
Multi-sport coverage
Refunds in cash (no playthrough required)
Still pays out bets that had already won before the injury
Cons
NBA coverage only for 1st quarter in regular season
No preseason markets
Game Day Guarantee: Every Game Day, Get Up To $100 Back In FanCash If Your Football Bet Loses AND Get $100 in FanCash After Your First $10 Bet
21+. New customers in AZ/CO/CT/DC/IA/IL/IN/KS/KY/LA/MA/ MD/MI/NC/NJ/OH/PA/TN/VT/VA/WV/WY. Different offer(s) available in NY.
Must sign up by 9/30/25. Apply offer in bet slip; place $1+ American football cash wager w/ odds +300 or longer each Game Day. See full Promo Terms and FanCash terms in the Fanatics Sportsbook app.

DraftKings Sportsbook Injury Protection
DraftKings’ Early Exit program looks oddly similar to Fanatics’ Fair Play - broad coverage across multiple sports, a generous injury window, and refunds paid in cash rather than Bonus Bets. Honestly, it’s so close you’d think DraftKings copied their homework.
That said, imitation isn’t a bad thing here. Plenty of other books have rolled out their own versions of injury protection, but most watered it down - limiting it to NFL only or swapping cash refunds for Bonus Bets.
DraftKings went the other way. They matched Fanatics stride for stride and gave bettors a fairer deal, proving they’re serious about protecting players from losing on bad luck.
Pros
Multi-sport coverage
Cash refunds (no expiry)
Automatic application
Cons
Trigger windows are stricter in NFL (1Q only)

FanDuel Sportsbook Injury Protection
FanDuel keeps it simple: NFL only. Their Bet Protect policy refunds NFL player props if a player goes down in the first quarter and doesn’t return. Singles are refunded in Bonus Bets, while parlays/SGPs get the affected leg voided and recalculated - and paid out as Bonus Bets.
It’s considerably narrower than Fanatics or DraftKings - no other sports are covered, and refunds come as Bonus Bets instead of cash.
Their watered-down version of this policy probably won't win them any customers, but if you're already with FanDuel and betting on NFL props, it’s a great safety net to have.
Pros
NFL protection on props
Applies to straights and parlays
Cons
NFL only
Refunds in Bonus Bets, not cash
Bonus Bets expire in 21 days
Place a $5 Wager and Get $300 in Bonus Bets If That Bet Wins
21+. New customers only. Offer(s) available in AZ/CO/CT/IA/IL/IN/KS/KY/LA/MD/MA /MI/NC/NJ/NY/OH/PA/TN/VT/VA/WV/WY/DC.
Minimum $5 first deposit required. Promotion bonus will be credited to your account within 72 hours of settlement of Qualifying Wager. First online real money wager only (minimum $5). Bonuses issued as non-withdrawable bonus bets that expire in 7 days.

bet365 Injury Protection
bet365’s Prop Protect mirrors FanDuel in that it’s NFL-only. The difference? The trigger window is a little more generous: if your player is ruled out before halftime and doesn’t return, Prop Protect applies.
Refunds are provided as Bonus Bets, and you only get 7 days to use them - tighter than FanDuel’s 21 days.
Still, it’s automatic on straights and parlay/SGP legs, making it a fair-value perk for existing bet365 users - who also benefit from other great bet365 features such as Early Payouts.
Pros
NFL coverage with halftime window
Applies to straights, parlays, & SGPs
Cons
NFL only
Refunds in Bonus Bets (1x rollover required)
Short 7-day bonus bet expiry
Bet $5 & Get $200 Bonus, plus 50 Spins
21+. New customers only. Limit one bonus per user.
Offer available in PA only. Different offer(s) available in AZ/CO/IA/IN/KY/LA/NJ/NC/OH/VA.
First online real money wager. $10 first deposit required within 30 days.
Minimum wager of $5 required to claim the $200 bonus bets. Must contain at least one selection at odds of -500 or greater (-200, -100, +100, etc).
Spins must be accepted within 30 days of claiming the offer. To accept your Spins, open an eligible game via Sports and click Accept or navigate to Casino then click 'Accept'. Eligible games are Finn and the Swirly Spin, Gonzo's Quest, Jack in a Pot and Piggy Riches Megaways.
Bonus issued as non withdrawable bonus bets that expires 7 days after being added to your Bonus Bet balance.

Is it better to get a Cash Credit or Bonus Bets as a refund?
Short answer? Cash is always king.
When a sportsbook refunds you in cash, that money goes straight back into your withdrawable balance. You can either pull it out instantly or re-bet it however you like. There are no strings attached and no expiry dates.
Bonus Bets are different. They come with two big catches:
The stake isn’t returned. If you place a $20 Bonus Bet at +200 and win, you get $40 in winnings. If you’d placed the same $20 in cash, you’d get $60 ($40 profit + $20 stake back).
Expiry pressure. FanDuel gives you 21 days, bet365 and ESPN BET just 7. Miss the window, and the Bonus Bet disappears.
If you’re choosing between books and all else is equal, always pick the one giving you cash refunds. You’ll thank yourself later.
What is “injury protection” in sports betting?
“Injury protection” is the industry’s term for a refund policy on player props. If the player you bet on exits the game early and doesn’t return, your bet doesn’t just die. Depending on the sportsbook, your stake might be refunded, or the leg in your parlay recalculated.
One of the best features sportsbooks have introduced in a long time, these rules soften the blow of bad beats where something that cannot be accounted for would torpedo your bet.
In practice, that means more fair results and a lot less frustration for bettors - but also some fine print to understand.
What Types of Bets Are Voided Due to Injury?
All five programs share the same backbone:
✅ Pre-game player props are covered.
✅ Both straight bets and player-prop legs inside parlays/SGPs can qualify.
❌ Live props and in-play bets are not covered.
❌ Futures and preseason games are excluded.
❌ If a player is inactive pre-game, normal sportsbook void rules apply (not injury protection).
Parlays are treated consistently: if your injured leg qualifies, it’s voided, and the rest of your ticket is recalculated at adjusted odds.
What sports can I get injury protection on?
What sports you can get injury protection for your player props depends on the sportsbook you are using.
Out of all 35+ sportsbooks in the US, only 5 of them offer some sort of injury insurance. Of these 5, three books limit their coverage to NFL, while two extend this policy across multiple sports.
For bettors who wager year-round across multiple leagues, Fanatics and DraftKings are clear winners.
But if your action is almost entirely NFL, the narrower programs might be all you need, and other factors such as bonuses, betting features, odds, etc might be more important to you.

Taking all factors into consideration (injury window, refund method,
Best NFL Injury Protection
Fanatics Sportsbook is the undisputed king of the NFL injury insurance, giving you the entire first half of the match as the injury window and paying out your refund in cash.
Best NBA Injury Protection
DraftKings Sportsbook takes the lead over the rest when it comes to NBA by allowing a generous early injury window that spans the first 2 quarters of all NBA matches, while also refunding your voided wagers as cash.
Best NHL Injury Protection
Both Fanatics Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook share the title when it comes to hockey, as both of them will refund you in cash if your player gets injured in the first period.
Best MLB Injury Protection
When it comes to baseball, Fanatics Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook are once again your best - and only - options, both refunding in cash if your batter is out before making his second appearance at plate, or your pitches fails to make 3 outs before his injury.
When does injury protection apply?
The timing window matters a lot - it decides whether you actually get your refund or not. Each sportsbook has its own cutoff for when a player has to leave the game for the insurance to kick in.

Takeaways
If you want the most forgiving NFL window, avoid FanDuel. They only give you coverage up to the end of the 1st quarter, while all the rest cover the entire 1st half.
If you’re betting NBA player props, DraftKings and Fanatics are the best choice with 1st quarter coverage during regular season, and 1st-half coverage during playoffs.
For baseball props, both Fanatics and DraftKings offer the fairest deal - they’ll protect pitcher bets if he doesn’t get through 3 outs or batter bets if he doesn’t reach a 2nd plate appearance.
Soccer bettors will only find protection at Fanatics and DraftKings, with first-half subs covered.
For tennis, Fanatics is the only sportsbook offering injury insurance coverage.

So... which sportsbook has the best injury protection overall?
When it comes to injury protection, not all sportsbooks are created equal. FanDuel, bet365, and ESPN BET have all made important strides by giving NFL bettors a safety net. DraftKings adopted the concept into multiple sports, making it a serious competitor in this space.
But the trailblazer - and still the leader - is Fanatics Sportsbook.
Here’s why Fanatics Fair Play stands out above the rest:
Multi-sport coverage: Fanatics is the only sportsbook protecting you across NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, and more. If you bet year-round, that breadth matters.
Generous injury windows: Whether it’s first-half coverage in the NFL, first-quarter NBA, or early-game rules in baseball, Fanatics consistently gives bettors more time and flexibility than rivals like FanDuel.
Cash refunds: Unlike books that rely on Bonus Bets, Fanatics refunds your stake in cash. That’s money you can withdraw instantly or re-bet however you choose.
While DraftKings deserves credit for rolling out a strong multi-sport program of its own, and the NFL-only operators are providing real value during football season, no other sportsbook offers the same mix of coverage, fairness, and flexibility that Fanatics does.
The Final Word
As a bettor who uses multiple sportsbooks for different purposes, once they introduced their Fair Play policy, Fanatics Sportsbook quickly became my choice for playing player props.
Bettors had been clamoring for this change in policy for a long time, and Fanatics were the only ones who actually listened.
While other betting sites have now introduced similar rules - unless the price difference on the line I'm looking at is huge - I have not really felt tempted to place this types of bets with anybody else.
It saved my ass on multiple occasions last season, and did so again recently when Nabers went down in Q2 vs the Chargers.
